1969 - 1976 Corvette: Service Bulletin: Air Conditioning Compressor Drive Belt to Radiator Hose Interference

Subject: Air Conditioning Compressor Drive Belt to Radiator Hose Interference
Model and Year: 1976 and Past Model Corvette Equipped with the 350 Cubic Inch Engine and Air Conditioning
Source: Chevrolet Dealer Service Technical Bulletin
Bulletin Number: 76-T-21, Section VI - (May 1976)

TO:  ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

Some 1976 and past model Corvettes equipped with the 350 cubic inch engine and air conditioning may experience an interference condition between the radiator outlet (lower) hose and the air conditioning compressor drive belt.  This belt chafing condition could damage the hose and may cause eventual coolant loss.

Belt to host interference has been eliminated by installing a belt guide, part number 458595, at the assembly plant.  This guide is mounted over the rear attaching bolt for the upper right side control arm.  The guide is between the belt and hose and prevents the belt from chafing the hose (see illustration on the following page).  The belt guide went into production on vehicle identification number 6S416060 December 18, 1975.

This condition can be corrected on past model and vehicles built prior to the VIN cutoff by installing the belt guide as shown on the illustration.  The belt guide can be obtained from GMPD.  Use nut, part number 124834, to attach guide over the top of the existing rear upper control arm nut and torque to 50 ft.-lbs.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
