The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Some customers may comment on a "Change Brake Pads" message that appears in the DIC. This concern may or may not be present when the car comes in for service. This message will not be associated with any DTCs. Dealers are to inspect the obvious components to see if the brake pads are in fact, worn, but if nothing is found, technicians are to closely inspect the brake pad wear sensor harness(s) for any damage. In some cases, it has been found that the sensor harness has made contact with a tire. This may cause the wiring / terminals to be pulled out of the plastic connector, and as a result, it causes the message to be displayed in the DIC. An example of this terminal being pulled out of the connector can be seen in the photo below:
If any damage is found to the brake pad wear sensor wiring, the harness will need to be replaced. If the terminals were pulled from the connector, either secure the terminals back into the connector, or, if this is not possible due to the extent of the damage, replace the terminals as required. To prevent this from happening in the future, secure the sensor harness to the brake hose with a zip tie.
If no obvious issues are found, dealership technicians are to proceed with standard diagnosis. On these cars, the brake pad wear sensor is part of the brake pad itself. Due to the high cost of the brake pads on these vehicles, it is not recommended that dealers replace the pads as a first order of business. If a particular sensor is suspected of having a concern, take a jumper wire and bypass the sensor in question. Drive the car and reevaluate the issue. If the concern is still present, the sensor (and associated brake pad) is not the cause of the concern.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
