1979 Corvette: Service Bulletin: Halogen Sealed Beams

Subject:  Halogen Sealed Beams
Model Year:  1979 Chevrolet and Corvette
Date:  January 1979
Bulletin Number: 79-I-4, Section XII

TO:  ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

This Bulletin is being reissued for P/N correction.  The Corvette P/N should read 5930632.  Please destroy all copies of the original issue of 79-I-4, dated January, 1979.

Starting in November, 1978, 1979 Corvettes were equipped with Halogen Sealed Beams as the high beam lamp only.  These lamps are now optionally available on 1979 Caprice and Impala models under RPO TT5.

The Halogen high beam increases the 4 lamp system candlepower from 75,000 to 150,000.  The halogen gas, enclosed with the tungsten filament in a small capsule within the sealed beam, allows the filament to produce a whiter, more penetrating beam, at equal or reduced power draw.

The lamps are readily identified by the word "Halogen" embossed on the glass. the Halogen-filled capsule is also visible through the front of the lens.  The electrical connections are identical to conventional lamps.

The use of Halogen Sealed Beams will be extended as the supply increases, probably on the 1980 models.

GMPD lists the lamps under Group 2.727.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
