Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant Shut Down Next Week Affecting 2021 Corvette Production

GM has confirmed with the Corvette Action Center that 2021 Corvette production will come to a halt next week due to a parts shortage

Apparently the month of May will only end up seeing two full weeks worth of Corvette production as the Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant is set to be closed next week due to another parts shortage.

A short time ago we were able to confirm the shutdown with Chevrolet.

Below is the official response we received:

Due to a temporary parts supply issue, we can confirm that Bowling Green Assembly will not run production the week of May 24. Our supply chain, manufacturing and engineering teams are working closely with our supply base to mitigate any further impact on production, and we expect the plant to resume normal operations on Tuesday, June 1st.

Although Chevrolet wouldn’t state what parts were in short supply, over the last several months we’ve been hearing reports that the shortage has been with the dual-clutch transmission cases at Tremec.  Earlier this year, we were able to confirm that that was in fact the case, however this time – we’ve been unable to verify that this is the cause of next week’s shutdown.

Given that the Assembly Plant was shut down two week ago and will be shut down next week, it’s expected that the final allocation numbers given to dealers for the month of June will also suffer from these shutdowns as production continues to get pushed back.

After seeing only two full weeks of production for the month of May, it’s more clear now why GM told dealers earlier this month that the allocation numbers for June would be fluid and “not set in stone”.

Just my opinion, but after a strike, Covid-19, a chip shortage, a clutch case shortage/parts shortage, GM will be behind production quota's for 2021, and at least thru 2022. If your lucky. As of now, shipping, and manufacturers have one leg in the air, and the other on a banana peel. It's very fragile. Many manufacturers are running on a prayer. Many aspects have not completely recovered yet, and some are predicting at least a two year delay. There are so many variables, and some of these are just still on shaky grounds. On the positive side, at least it's heading in the right direction. Good luck all new C8 future owners.
