Most people don't realize, but Bill Mitchell and Zora Arkus-Duntov were very close to developing a 1973 mid-engine Corvette that was known internally at Chevrolet, as "390000". It was also called the "V-body" or "V-car" as well.

The Chevrolet Engineering documentation that outlines the development and specifications of the 1973 mid-engine Corvette is nearly fifty pages long and dated December 1970. Below is some of the documentation shown. Click on the individual images for a larger view.
