Classic car collector Luigi Capilupi had finally found the Corvette he always wanted, but on the day it was supposed to arrive, he learned it was in a crash on Interstate 80 East last weekend.

Antonio Capilupi said he and his father found the 1977 Corvette on eBay and bought it in late June from a man in Brookfield, Illinois, after they had someone go over it with a fine-tooth comb. It was supposed to arrive Wednesday, but it never came.

Antonio Capilupi, of Danbury, Connecticut, then contacted the transportation company and a Warren County auto body shop and learned the car had been in the New Jersey crash. An Internet search led him to an article about the car carrier that late Sunday night veered off I-80 East in Allamuchy Township, and he spotted the blue Corvette in an accompanying photo, he said.
