Inconsistent and inaccurate Oil Level Gauge readings on the Early 1956 V-8 Passenger Engines may be due to:
- Gauge rubbing on the oil pan baffle.
- Improperly positioned tube.
- Bent gauge.
- Wrong gauge.
It is important that necessary corrections be made to eliminate customer complaints of presumed oil consumption due to inaccurate gauge reading that may arise at oil changes or shortly thereafter.
To eliminate the above:
- The gauge should be straightened and the sharp edges smoothed off at the tip to permit easy insertion of the gauge in the tube.
- Straighten the tube or bend it slightly forward.
- Then if necessary, remove the oil pan and cut a 3/8" notch in the rear edge of the baffle approximately 2" long starting 1-1/2" from the edge of the pan.
