The intent of this article is to re-emphasize to all technicians that running a gear tooth contact pattern check on the ring and pinion is essential, to be assured of a properly assembled axle.

A gear tooth contact pattern check should be run whenever an axle assembly has been disassembled for any reason.

A 1pt. can P/N 1051196 of yellow lead chromate has been made available for service and is the only recommended compound.  Yellow lead chromate has the proper consistency and color to give a good readable tooth contact impression which is always the final check for correct axle shimming.
