Condition

Some customers may comment that they hear a ticking noise coming from the engine when cold.

  • This ticking noise will mainly occur during the first initial start in the morning.

Cause

This condition may be caused by a lifter not having a sufficient amount of oil during cold start operation (not pumped up).

Correction

To correct this condition, follow the Service Procedure below.

Service Procedure

Allow the engine to sit overnight.

Note: You may need to allow 5-7 minutes to confirm.

  1. Start the vehicle and listen for a tick noise.
  • Drive the vehicle through the DFM modes.
  • Check for any misfire DTCs and record:
  • If the noise has been isolated, inspect for a bent pushrod and/or collapsed lifter.
  • Parts Information

Note: Only select the parts that coincide with the repair performed. Replace the part with the P/N outlined in the Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) in accordance with the vehicle VIN.

Note: Refer to Service Bulletin 20-NA-038 for additional information on AFM and DFM usage.
