The subject retaining ring is a two winding spiral type instead of the snap type as shown in the Chassis Service Manual, Section 9, Item 16, Fig. 54; and the Corvette Manual, Section 9, Item 26, Fig. 9.

The retaining ring can be removed using a small screwdriver.  Place the blade of the screwdriver under the end of the ring and pry out and up while rotating the shaft.  Install a new ring when reassembling.
