    Default Fuel Sending Unit

    Howdy Ya'll

My fuel gauge will not drop below the three quarter mark.
When I fill the tank up, the needle will go past the full mark though but never falls below the three quarter mark.

I am thinking Fuel Sending Unit. Any thoughts on this?
Anyone ever had the need to replace a fuel sending unit in a
    81?

If so, you're gonna tell me it's a major piece of work, right?

    Thanks,
    Terry in Tn

Unplug the sender. If gauge goes to E, it's the sender. You just have to drop the tank. Fetch your build sheet while your there.

I don't think you need to pull the tank, it may come out with the tank in place. Damn things are expensive, look into the cheap one from JC whitney and use it to fix yours

Looking at an article in an old Vette issue, looks like it comes out the top. Assembly manual kinda suggest that too. But I am not sure about it.

Comment.........You stated if the needle goes to empty, "E" it's the sending unit. My needle stops at the 3/4 full mark but returns past the full mark when I fill it up. Never drops to "E". Unplug sending unit.....sorry I missed that when I first red your reply.

Could it be a short in the gauge?

I have two different parts catalogs and the price is $79.

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Terry

The sender unit is over $100, unless you found a very good deal. Usually what happens is the sender internals get worn out and either stop making contact or sticks

Yep.....You are correct. I was looking at the price of something else.
They do in fact cost considerably over $100.

I'll do that check you suggested.

    Thanks,
    Terry
