    Default Oil Change

I have did a search here but didn't find any info.

I plan on changing the oil myself on my just acquired 06 Z06 and wanted to ask people here that have done the same if there were any "gotchas" that I would need to be aware of? I know it takes 8 quarts of Mobil 1 5W30 but I wondered if there were any special tricks when I go to refill the canister. Thanks for any help.

    Tip #1~
The LS7 has 2 drain plugs. One plug will yield about a quart and a half, the other will yield the balance.

Tipo #2~ Be sure to buy magnetic drain plugs if you don't already have them. Your Chevy dealer should have them for about $3ea.

Tip #3~ You'll need an AC-Delco PF-48 filter, they're about $6 from your dealer also. (More expensive non-compliant filters can be had, if you don't need your warranty.)

Tip #4~ Be sure your oil catch pan can hold 8 qts. (Not the time to find out it's only a 6 qt capacity container!)

Tip#5~ "Preload" the new oil filter with fresh oil prior to installation. (It'll help get oil pressure up to the valve galleries quicker upon startup.)

Tip #6~ The "oil bag" will hold all 8 qts.

Tip #7~ The drain plug torque is about 12-15lb.ft.

Tip #8~ You might want to get an oil analysis done. (Blackstone labs does sell a kit for this.)

Tip #9~ Be sure to inspect the magntic tips if you already have them, and clean them before re-installation. (Don't be alarmed if you have powdered metal on them. DO BE ALARMED IF YOU SEE BEARINGS, SPRINGS OR SHARDS OF METAL!)

    It should look like this~

Thanks for the valuable information. I take it the front plug in the picture is the other plug that you speak of? I'll be sure and round up what I need so I can do it right. Again Thanks.

Norty 's got down pat . I might add that you keep a good record .I go to extremes and record the mileage ,% used ,date ,all filter brand and stock numbers .The oil i record all the numbers on every quart or jug including date of purchase ,bar code numbers everything.

Two reasons ess questions if you have a warranty questioned .Second you might not be a fanatic but the guy who buys your car down the road will think you are .

Good points and well taken. I had just sold a black 94 Conv. w/57k miles that I had put back to "like new" condition and I kept all receipts of things bought for the car and done to the car which helped my sale tremendously, so I know what you mean with documentation. I was going to let my local dealer do the oil changes for me like they did on the 94 but the price that they are quoting me to change it on the Z06 was a little more than I wanted to pay so I decided that I will do it myself (which I do for my other vehicles) and save some money to put towards the Z for other items. Thanks.

Thanks and good point. Document anything and everything possible. I also document the amount of oil used by the engine. (I replace my oil @ 20%) I measure the amount of oil expelled during the change as well.

Lubrication is my specialty as I'm a tribologist.
