Pretty igenious design for sure and it works. Took some engineering doesn't hold a lot but being that the button for the fuel door is in there I make sure when I have to access it that I don't have the park brake set

Thanks guys, and especially to Junkman for the super-detail photos. I have looked at the hinges with a flashlight and decided that they were a sort of dual-pivot design. I'll coax some lube into the mechanism and see if I can get them free. The entire lid can be taken off as well if I can't get the hinges free otherwise. I just didn't want to strongarm the lid and find the wink link in the assembly. I'll let the GM interior people do the stress testing for me. And yes, this is a a C5 ('03 Z06) that I'm talking about.

Thanks again for the quick responses.

Wow what a thread I started!,

    So the consensus is -

The ashtray lid automatically opens when the larger door opens and will not shut by itself. The only way to close the ashtray door is to shut the main door on top of it ....?

I thought the ashtray door could shut by itself with the larger door remaining in the open position ?

    yes on a 04 C5.

Now I am getting confused again, I thought both of these doors worked independantly from each other???????? Mine does not have this extra lid that closes over the ash tray so I am at a lost here. I am going to research it but again I was under the impression that they worked independantly of each other, the small one is attached directly to the removal ash tray itself

    1) Correct.

    2) No, not unless you remove/disable the ashtray door spring that automatically flips it open.
