    Default 4 Speed T-Shifter Reverse Lock-out Rod

I realigned the shift rods on my T-10 and I am still having trouble getting the transmission into reverse. Can someone please tell me what the end of the small rod on the reverse lock-out looks like? Is it a clean straight cut or is it rounded. I know this is asking a lot; but if I knew the length of the rod I might have some idea if this is the problem. I live in the boon-docks of Bakersfield and the dealer has nothing I can look at.

    Thanks

Did you align it with the tool? It seems so tight up there. Do you have singal exhaust, I have dual exhaust now and theres no room...

Yes I did use the alignment tool. I have a single and then into dual. From reading other post, I think you have to drop the driver side exhaust if you have duals all the way. It is a nightmare with just the single. I will pray for you. The end of my thin lock out rod looks pinched and not a sharp clean end to it. I was wondering if this is how a new one looks.

On my 1981 I had the same problem ... I aligned the linkage and still had problems getting the trans into reverse. I bent 2 rods, before finding out that the shifter itself was worn. The bottom end of the shifter where the main shaft goes through the shifter for the linkage attachment was worn and oblong.. I waited a month for parts, ended up buying a NOS shifter..

The Rod that goes down from the top for reverse is about 10" or so long and peened flat on one end. Here is a photo of the shifter, I think it is basically the same just different lengths for older 4-speeds.

The parts I ordered are highlighted, as I said I ended up ordering a complete shifter..

    Good Luck

Thanks I have seen your write-up and I was hoping that realignment would do the trick. I will measure the rod and see if that could be it. It goes into reverse, but it is very difficult to do so. I think I will wind-up with a Hurst shifter.

    Thanks, I appreciate the input

I've adjusted my linkage some because I couldn't get into 2nd very well. After adjusting the 1/2nd linkage I couldn't get into reverse. If you look at rare81's drawing you will see that SH036 is 1st and 2nd and SH035 is 3rd and 4th. In my case I made SH036 out of alignment with SH037 so the rod would not pass over SH037 to reverse, SH038. If you haven't changed the rods length then try adjusting the 1st and 2nd linkage to a good middle position before pulling your hair out. Also remove the linkage that goes back up to the steering column, it could be binding and preventing you going into reverse. You can tell if this is the problem, if you can pull the shift rod up and move the shifter over to reverse but can't push it up into reverse. Lucky

The shifts are very good in all of the other gears but getting it into reverse. I did have to adjust the rod lengths when I used the alignment tool. What I did notice, was that the "interlock" SH037 seemed very thin. It looked like a shim with very little thickness to it. I will take out the reverse "T" shift rod and measure it today. The end of it looks as if it was cut with wire cutters with both side beveled or pinched at the tip. More of a "V" shape at the very end of it.

I do not have the rod that goes to the steering column connected.

    Thanks for your information lucky76
