Default Fuel Vapor Canister leaking raw gasoline

My '78 developed a gasoline leak while running down the highway. Made it home to find a steady drip of gasoline leaking from the Vapor Canister. Fuel tank is only about 1/2 full, so not likely an overflow from fuel tank.
Considering only 'vapors' are supposed to enter/exit the canister, something else has failed and allowing gasoline to flow into the canister. I am clueless where to begin looking for problem.

Mine did that years ago and it turned out to be the vacuum operated valve that sits on top of the canister. The housing had cracked at a seam and wouldn't allow the valve to port vacuum to the canister thereby allowing the vapors to accumulate to the point that they condensed out to a liquid. At least that was my theory. Epoxied the valve back together and seemed to fix the problem.

Thanks; seems like that's lot of gasoline condensing... but possible!

    That's what I thought. That's why I said just a theory.
