Corvette stolen in 1970 is returned to TN man

Classic muscle car now worth $65,000

By Kate Howard THE TENNESSEAN December 6, 2009

The 1965 Corvette was worth maybe $2,200 when a thief stole it off Lower Broadway 39 years ago. The rightful owner will drive it back home this week, worth 30 times what he lost, after it was recovered nearly four decades later in Arizona.

Chance Mayfield parked the convertible, Nassau blue with a white top, on Lower Broadway and went to the honky-tonks in November 1970. It was a great night at the Broadway Barn, he said, until he walked out to the parking lot and the like-new muscle car was gone.

"That ruined my night," Mayfield said with a chuckle.

The pain of losing the spotless car was already long forgotten when he got a phone call this summer from a detective who said his car had been found. Once he got his mind around what car he was talking about, Mayfield thought someone was playing a prank on him.

In an ironic sense, he's fortunate that he had no theft insurance on the car. Had the insurance company paid the claim, they would own the car now. No telling how much they would want for it.

Roy Exum: A 1965 Blue Corvette

One November night 39 years ago, a man from Cookeville named Chance Mayfield nestled his gorgeous blue Corvette up against the curb on Lower Broadway in Nashville and proceeded to visit some of the lively establishments in the area. He even remembers he had a swell time at a honky-tonk then called "The Broadway Barn."

But finally the fiddler was paid and, when he came back, the 1965 Corvette was nowhere to be found; it had been stolen. To make matters even worse, he had somehow allowed the car insurance to lapse and he still recalls somewhat tersely, "It ruined my night."

So imagine how Chance, now 68 years old, felt one day late this summer - on his birthday to be exact - when a detective from far-away Scottsdale, Ariz., called him to say, "Guess what? We just found your car!"

I've never had a car stolen and I hope I never do. Glad to see he was lucky enough to get his car back.

After 39 years, Tenn. man reunites with stolen Corvette in Scottsdale

    by Ofelia Madrid - Dec. 11, 2009 12:00 AM
    The Arizona Republic

The last time Chance Mayfield saw his 1965 Corvette was on a late November night in 1970 in the parking lot of a Nashville nightclub.

Sometime after he went into the club, his prized possession was stolen.

On Monday, 39 years after the fact, Mayfield was reunited in Scottsdale with his valuable muscle car.

"I got down on my knees and kissed it," said Mayfield, who lives in Baxter, Tenn.
