View Full Version : Air Comp. boo-boo

I'm going to relay info about a waste of time & money I pulled in the hopes that it doesn't happen to someone else.
My air compressor started making that dreaded grinding noise a few months back, so I invested in a new one. I did get it on eBay, brand new, etc.,still in the box for $102.00 (I was proud of that buy) but that's not the point. Today I put it on along with a new smog pump and belt. Well, after everything's said and done the noise is still there when I turn it on. The moral of this story is...........CHECK THE BELT TENSIONER UNDER THE COMPRESSOR BEFORE YOU BUY A NEW ONE!!!! Duh!!! :duh I'm sure most of you would have checked all that but there's always that chance. Turning the compressor on gave just enough extra tension on that pulley (worn) to make the noise. Ok, I vented. Thanks :(

This is not mean to be an "I told you so," like you I just want to offer some helpful advice.

The best way to avoid this is to remove the belt and spin all the accessories and idlers by hand. Sometimes it is difficult to know where the noise is coming from.

Also, whenever you change the belt or remove it for any other reason, always spin all accessories and idlers by hand and make sure all bearings are smooth before putting the belt back on.

Have a great day,
