The "AutoExtremist (http://www.autoextremist.com/on-the-table1/)" has a blurb about this and so does "AutoWeek (http://autoweek.com/article/car-news/dirty-laundry)".

Ferrari is making money while most of the rest of Fiat is not (except maybe Jeep and Ram). Sergio wants to cash in on that while he can.
di Montezemolo wants to keep Ferrari exclusive by limiting production. Sergio wants to sell more Ferraris and make more money - he hopes.
Now Sergio is in control of everything.
