GM plans extra four-week shutdown for Corvette plant

General Motors will shut the Corvette plant in Bowling Green for four weeks longer than planned after the holidays as part of an effort to reduce overall production by 30 percent.

When the plant shuts down as scheduled on Dec. 23, UAW Local 2164 members will be off the job for another four weeks, returning Feb. 13, plant manager Paul Graham said in a memo sent to employees today.

Cuts at the Corvette plant, which employs 601 hourly workers, accompany production declines GM announced today at 18 North American plants. With November sales down 41 percent compared to a year prior, GM will produce roughly 30 percent fewer vehicles in the first quarter of 2009, a company press release said.
