1959 Corvette: Service Bulletin: Steering Gear Lubricant Works Up Mast Jacket and Leaks at Directional Signal Housing in Hot Weather

There is a possibility that the above complaint may occur under certain extreme conditions, such as, continued driving and parking on very steep grades in very hot temperatures, since there is no seal between the mast jacket and steering gear.  The condition can be aggravated further if the steering gear has been overfilled, or the lubricant has become fluid through the addition of fluid type lubricants in the Field.

In the event leakage of the lubricant is encountered, it may be corrected by removing the steering wheel and the bearing and seat assembly at the top of the mast jacket.  Insert a felt seal, part #3721433, between the steering shaft and mast jacket and push down to a position just above the steering gear housing.

If the lubricant has become fluid, it is recommended that the steering gear be drained and re-filled, using a G.M. steering gear lubricant to prevent repeat complaints.
