John Lingenfelter on Modifying Small-Block Chevy Engines", published four years ago by HP Books, is probably not new to a lot of Corvette Action Center Members who do engine work. Nevertheless, the book is such an outstanding reference source and such a darn good read so I think it needs to be reviewed every few years. I've been building small-blocks since the early 1970s and every time I go back and reread this book I find something new I didn't really catch before.
Not too many people are going to quarrel with John L.'s knowledge and experience in building street high-performance, small-block V8s. A huge part of that vast knowledge and experience is in this book. Lingenfelter's sensible philosophy of engine building comes through, loud and clear. His rules that make up the "Lingenfelter Power Formula" (see pg. 2) should be hung on the wall in any garage where small-blocks are built. DIY small-block builders should learn them well enough to recite them when sleeping.
This book, besides being an excellent technical reference, is also fun to read which I can't say about most of the books available on small-block performance engine building. The book is written such that both techies and beginners can understand its concepts. Lingenfelter's sense of humor shows in places, making the book all that more enjoyable.
All basic and some advanced facets of building a small-block for street high-performance use are covered. Everything from blocks, cranks, rods and pistons to heads, cams, induction, exhaust, fuel injection and blowers is covered. There are also chapters on blueprinting and dyno testing. Lastly, for the one or two people left in the world who don't know who John Lingenfelter is, the first chapter is titled "Who is John Lingenfelter?"
