Several months ago, during my Saturday afternoon B&B (that's "Beer and Barcalounger) session with "NASCAR Scene" magazine, I came across an advertisement from Kimbrely-Clarke (the "Kleenex" people) for a new product called "Wypalls", a paper-based, disposable shop towel. Kimberly-Clark Professional was advertising this as the "Crew Chief's Choice" and, in the ad, there was Tony Eury Jr., Dale Earnhardt Jr's famed Crew Chief staring down at me while he hand-modeled a "Wypall X80 Towel". In a stunning example of how an association with NASCAR can successfully market products to unsuspecting race fans, I began to think more seriously about shop rags...uh, shop towels. "Gosh darnit" I thought, "my shop rags are boring and low-tech. I've got technology everywhere else in the shop. It's time to go high-tech with towels." Ok. Enough of the tongue-and-cheek approach. Until I contacted the Kimberly-Clark Professional folks, I'd never considered using disposable paper towels for shop work. Oh sure, I'd sometimes used kitchen paper towels for cleaning windshields and a few other, light-duty wiping tasks but, generally, for any serious automotive work, for which ordinary paper towels were woefully inadequate, my wipes of choice were old t-shirts or cloth shop rags I bought by the bag at Costco or Home Depot. When the rags were too dirty or sopping wet with oil or gear lube, I'd toss them in a sealed can for later disposal at one of Los Angeles County's household hazardous waste disposal points. Shop rags are problematic in a couple of ways. First, they're "old-tech" in that they're not all that absorbent. Secondly, if they're made of recycled material or are previously used then laundered for reuse, they may contain metallic residue lodged in their fibers. If you're using them to wipe down engine parts prior to assembly or to clean surfaces which will show scratches, the metallic residue can be problematic. I decided to try Wypalls in place of any rags for four months, so I ordered a box--for some unknown reason K-C calls it a "Brag Box"--of 160 X80 Towels (PN 41041) which K-C says can replace 25-lbs of shop rags. When it arrived and I pulled one out and could see, right away, that they really weren't "paper" in the way most of us think of that substance. X80 Towels are made of a material Kimberly-Clark calls "Hydroknit" which is a composite of paper pulp and polypropylene. In a process called "hydro entanglement", water jets force paper fibers into a polypropylene base material. Since no glues or binders are used, Wypalls are safe and effective when used with solvents. The polypropylene base has an added benefit in that it has an affinity for oil and grease which further enhances a an X80 towel's ability to pick-up oily messes. All this makes one of these wipes highly absorbent, quite versatile and very strong. They're tough enough for the nasty, dirty jobs but actually soft enough for wiping your face and hands. Do they work? Heck, yeah. I was actually surprised at how much better they are than rags. In fact, they are so absorbent that I'm using only a half to to a third the amount X80 Wypalls as I did shop rags. I don't generally use Wypalls for drying my face or hands but I did try them for that and they are, indeed soft enough to use on your skin. This Hydroknit stuff is just what K-C claims it is are as far as strength goes, too. The X80 Towels are just as strong as a common, cloth shop rag, perhaps even stronger if the shop rags low quality or have been laundered and reused too many times. Bottom line: not only are these Wypalls the "Crew Chiefs Choice" they're my choice for any of my automotive cleaning and wiping jobs. There's more information at www.kcprofessional.com or at www.wypall.com including streaming video explaining the product's strength, absorption and how its made. There is also information on where to purchase Wypall products. So...now that I'm using these racing shop towels, I can mop up the beer I just spilled with the same wipes NASCAR crew chief Tony Eury Jr. uses. Is this a great country, or what? This trip was more of a presser to acquaint some of we writers with Bridgestone's Blizzak winter tire line than it was to sell us on the school but, nevertheless, one couldn't help but be impressed with the school itself. The school runs each Winter in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, one of the few places in the country which has consistently cold weather for a long stretch of winter but also has plenty of hotels and airline service. We didn't take the full winter driving class. What we got is condensed version which both fit it into a half-a-day and to gave us enough coaching on snow and ice driving so we could properly evaluate the tires that afternoon. In spite of the condensed circulium, the teaching we received showed me enough of how the Bridgestone Winter School works to tell you that the instruction there is top notch. While the school offers a wide-range of course levels--from very simple winter driving basics all the way to advanced skills used by rally and ice racing drivers--its core customer are those who are required to drive public roads in the worst winter weather and get there in a safe, efficient manner. Examples are: delivery drivers--FedEx, UPS and so forth--taxi companies which operate in snow and ice, long-haul truckers, bus operators, the military, public utilities along with everyday folks who must drive, regardless of weather conditions, such as route salespeople or long-distance commuters. Now, having lived in the northeast for a few years and having spent a lot of time in the mountains of the western U.S., I've got some winter driving under my belt. I've even driven my 1995 C4 across a snowy, icy Interstate in Colorado. In recent years, most of the winter driving I've done has been in west-central Wyoming in a '99 Chevy Blazer with 4WD, limited-slip in the rear axle and Goodyear Wrangler MT/R (an aggressive off-road tire) at all four corners. In that truck, I've yet to encounter a winter driving challenge I couldn't meet. That includes the steep, winding gravel road leading to our family's winter retreat in Etna, Wyoming in the dead of winter at -20° with a foot of new-fallen snow on top of hard-packed snow and ice. After a couple of hours of instruction at the Bridgestone Winter Driving School, I was driving the school's instruction track in a Toyota Camry (front wheel drive and no limited slip) fitted with four of Bridgestone's, new, Blizzak WS-60 severe-snow-rated street radials in a slightly faster, certainly more controlled and obviously safer manner then I'd ever been in the Blazer. At this point in time, late November '07, winter has arrived in parts of the country which see freezing temperatures. It's time to think about winter driving safety. If you want to learn to drive an ordinary passenger car (even a Vette), SUV or light truck efficiently and in the worst of weather, yet remain safe and in control; I heartily recommend the Bridgestone Winter Driving School http://www.winterdrive.com/. If you're looking for the best in street tires for driving on show- and ice-covered roads, consider Bridgestone's Blizzak line. http://www.bridgestonetire.com/ Hib Halverson Sat, 24 Nov 2007 14:44:30 -0500 C-Magic Wax and Cyclo Polisher http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=72

by: Hib Halverson

Description: This is a product review consisting of two products: the C-Magic 's World Class Wax and the Cyclo Polisher by Cyclo Toolmakers. In 1997 Chevrolet did the unthinkable: they re-designed the most popular and most modified engine in American history. The Chevrolet small-block V-8 made its debut in 1955, and with its arrival, Chevrolet instantly leaped to the forefront in the minds of hot rodders and performance enthusiasts alike. While the engine grew in displacement and technology over the next 30 years, its basic design remained unchanged . . . until 1997, when the Generation III LS1/LS6 engine design was introduced. The LS1 engine first appeared in the 1997 Corvette, and soon followed in the Camaro Firebird and thousands of full-size Chevy trucks and SUVs. It also powers the hot new Pontiac GTO! This book is essential for the enthusiast who wants to get the most performance out of this new engine design but is only familiar with the older Chevy small-blocks. Covered is everything you need to know about these engines, including the difficult engine removal and installation, simple engine bolt-ons, electronic controls for the Generation III engine, and detailed engine builds at four different power levels. Corvette Fuel Injection Electronic Engine Control is the book that explains that system. Chuck Probst, author of the authoritative Bentley books on Bosch and Ford fuel injection systems, has worked with GM and aftermarket engineers, trainers, and technicians to bring the same sort of inside information to an authoritative understanding of Corvette engine controls. The comprehensive troubleshooting tips and service procedures presented here are a great aid in mastering Corvette engine control systems. The book begins with a survey of the different fuel injection systems used in these cars: Throttle Body Injection (TBI), Multiport Fuel Injection (MFI), and Sequential Fuel Injection (SFI). Probst covers the reasons behind J1930 terminology (electrical/electronic systems diagnostic terms, definitions, abbreviations and acronyms) and the engine management concept of Open Loop and Closed Loop Operation. In addition, oxygen sensor and heated oxygen sensor operation, traction control, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), Air Injection (AIR), catalytic converters, evaporative controls, octane and fuel volatility are among the many thoroughly covered topics. Probst's treatment of On-Board Diagnostics (OBD and OBD II) involves topics such as misfire detection, crankshaft position sensor operation, Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor design, Electronic Spark Control (ESC), and Central Processing Unit (CPU). This handy tool allows you to check the entire ignition system while it is in the car! Once the ignition tests good, you can continue troubleshooting and find the culprit. MSD has offered an Ignition Tester for several years and for 2000 has upgraded it with a microprocessor and several other new features. The Tester produces a simulated trigger signal that fires the ignition just as if the engine were running. A special, load producing clip-on spark plug is included to connect to the coil wire. If the spark is unable to jump the gap of the tester, there is an ignition problem and you can trace it down. For racers with our new Programmable 7 Ignition Control that are using the Individual Cylinder Management system, the Digital Tester has a circuit to check the operation of the Cam Sync signal too. The Tester has an LCD display that clearly shows the simulated rpm. This also allows you to test the accuracy of any rpm limits, rpm activated switches, shift light operation and your tachometer. The Eagle F1 GS-D3 excels in wet conditions by delivering class-leading hydroplaning resistance and traction, as well as offers competitive dry performance. Like all summer tires, it is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.</p><p>The Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires feature Goodyear's AAtrax tread compound molded into a distinctive wet weather racing-derived OneTRED directional tread design and earns the highest "AA" Uniform Tire Quality Grade wet traction rating. The Eagle F1 GS-D3's OneTRED design combines three distinct patterns to enhance dry and wet performance. A solid and continuous center zone maintains constant road contact to enhance straight-line tracking and initial steering response. Next, sweeping intermediate power transfer bridges use "virtual rib" technology that emulates racing slicks by delivering shoulder-to-shoulder tread contact to further enhance steering response and dry road cornering traction. Then, sweeping aquachannel grooves, which are three times longer than the tire's contact patch, angle forward and out to the edges of the tread to avoid trapping water between the tire and the road enhancing wet traction and hydroplaning resistance. And finally, the virtual ribs flow into the shoulder area to form long, stable shoulder blocks that grip the road during cornering and help resist the wear associated with aggressive driving.</p><p>The tire's structure includes twin, high-tensile steel belts reinforced with spirally wound nylon that distribute the vehicle's load across the tire's footprint to provide high-speed durability and uniform ride qualities. Slightly angled body ply construction with high-ply turn ups enhance steering precision and high speed stability while exterior sidewall rim flange protectors help guard wheels from curb damage.</p> Hib Halverson Thu, 17 May 2007 09:56:08 -0400 Scotchgard Paint Protection Film http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=29

by: Hib Halverson

Description: Scotchgard Paint Protection Film maintains the beauty and integrity of automotive finishes on vulnerable exterior painted surfaces such as leading hood edges, fender end caps and rocker panels. We have found that most C4 Corvettes inherently experience a slight amount of twisting at the fastening points of the support beam to the transmission and differential housing connection surfaces. Although fastened with high grade bolts, self-locking nuts and adhered with factory sealant, the driveline components of the C4 Corvette still experience some level of counterforce load-induced lateral deflection between the members while under heavy loading. This allowance of flex in the driveline beam fastening joints creates a condition where the chassis structure must additionally contend with. One common side effect of this phenomenon is where the rear of the vehicle tends to kick out to the right during aggressive high RPM gear shifting. Notice that the C5 or 1997 and newer Corvette was redesigned so that lateral deflection of the driveline is practically non existent. The C5 Corvette driveline consists of a drive shaft within a tube that has a bell housing fused to each end.
