    Default Just another restoration project

Well I am finally back home after 28 straight hours behind the wheel, in 30 degree heat. I drove down to Bristol PA. top pick up a WWII project jeep that I recently purchased. I didn't think I had enough work to do with only three Corvettes being restored/rebuilt at the same time, so I thought I would add to the mix with this latest toy.

Barry, I did take into consideration your offer to spend a little time together ( it would have made my day ) but the trailer was a one day only rental, and over the period of 28 hours I spent on the road, the only stops that were made were for fueling, or releaving ourselves. Other then that, no rest, or food stops were ever made. See you at the Corvette show.

oh sure, you come hours upon hours of travel time and distance to a place an hour from me and don't want to spend 15 minutes over a cup of coffee. Well, I know just where I stand than...........

only kidding! No problem Bob, I understand completely. Usually when I'm on a trip my goal is to simply get done what I need and get the h*ll back home again. Any delay is too much.

I'll see you in a month anyway.

    cool looking Jeep!

    Bob:

Looking good. You look like you just got out after an hour and a half ride in the Jeep. That thing looks really familiar to me. Just like the 59 M38-A1 we used to have.

See ya at Carlise next month. We'll raise a glass or two.

    Very Cool.

Who is the body by? Is it a Willy's or a Ford?
My family has always had Jeeps as well as other Army Truck. My uncle has an original 1946 Ford military Jeep, a 1950 Willy's and my Grandfathers 1966 Cj5 and a few others. My Father has a 1953 Willy's that was he built in 1968. It has a Buick v6 installed. We had a few others, but sold them due to not enough garage space.

Yours has fullfloating axels so it is a 1940-45? I see that your grill does not tilt and the parklights are large. I thought that all early military Jeeps had the tilting grill and small parklights. I like the tilt out windshield. Did you get all the parts with it. Is is setup on the original 24v.

There are a couple excellent places in California and Oregon if you need parts.
You should look around for a matching trailer. They are not only very practical but they look really cool behind one.
    Very Cool. oWEN

Owen, It's a 1944 Ford GPW, and I did receive the correct grill with the purchase.

The reason you see the funny one on the front, is because it actually saw service in Asia, and was later transfered to Australia, where modifications had to be made. I have been informed that the Aussies wanted a few things differently, and one of them was the tilting grill lamps be replaced by one with standard, non tilting headlamps and a redesigned grill, such as the one in the photo.

It is setup for 6 volts ( which I will keep ) because I was supplied with some expensive NOS electrical parts, including, but not limited to the voltage regulator, ignition parts, original Autolite numbers matching coil, etc, etc.

I also received about three boxes of additional crap , which as yet I have not been able to check out. It also came with three ( 3 ) original combat wheels, that look to be very usable.

As far as a trailer is concerned, I made an offer on a 100% rust free unit when I went down to pick up the jeep, and I am waiting for the owner to contact me.

    Thank's for your encouraging words

That is some cool history. My uncle has a brengun carrier that the Canadian Governement has been trying to buy off him. It is said to be one of the only complete ones left. it has all the armour and original serial number still on it. Post some more photos of the Jeep. Email me if you are looking for stuff, I know where a few parts and complete Jeeps are. Good Luck and keep posting the progress.

Thank's for your offer oWEN, I will most certainly call on you in the future .

By the way, I got a call from George, the owner of " Army Jeep Parts " and he accepted my offer for the WWII trailer that I saw when I drove down to pick up my jeep. Those of you who will be attending the Corvette show in Carlisle will have a chance to see the trailer. I have made arrangements to have it trailered down to the show, where it will be delivered to me and can be seen on my vendor spaces at I 101 to I 103.

This is a really cool thread! It boggles my mind the things people will collect and or restore.

Not far from me is a mom & pop pharmacy that sits inline in a strip center. If it wasn’t for their “sign” you would never even know they are there.

The “sign” which is parked up by the main street is a beautifully restored Deuce And A Half with red MASH markings on it. What an eye catcher!

Your Jeep is really something else!

Keep us posted on your progress.

Your new toy looks fairly complete. Those old warhorses are remarkably less complicated to work on than old Vettes. You'll have fun with it, I'm sure!!
