    Default Keep Him,or Can Him????

My Help has been screwing up!

He's a good kid and has a clean valid drivers license,Works hard when he's here,Real smart and real mechanically inclined,Can do just about anything with a little guidance!

The problem is,I never know if he is going to show up or when!
He was supposed to work every week day after he gets out of school at noon and some Saturdays when needed, and then work a full 40 hr week after he graduates next week form High School.

I get things laid out for him to do,then he may not show up or even call!
I hadn't heard from him for a week and then yesterday he showed up at 4:00 wanting to work after I gave up and was trying to get things done by myself!

I've tried to explain to him that I need someone dependable so I know what to schedule and when,It's hard to schedule things if you don't know if or when your going to have help!

He said he would do better,But this has been going on for 3 months and I just don't think he will!

I like the kid,he dose work hard while he's here,But I just really have no clue if he will be here when I need him!~!!!

You guys decide,I'm at a loss!

    Thanks!

Gone. I would have canned him a long time ago, but there again it's a good thing I'm not a cop either.

For every day he doesn't show up or is late, add another day until he gets paid e.g. missed 3 days his paycheck gets held up by 3 days ... or more

If the lad see he can get away with it, then it may be a mute point, Sometimes it is best to cut the problem and that rids oneself of the aggravation too ...

If he can't take any more pride in having a job and learning a skill, then one has to wonder just how good of a job he really is doing...

Shake hands and wish him well as he heads out the door. People don't change without something drastic impacting them. You may actually be doing him a favor.

As my father used to say " I only hire kids because they know everything"

I agree with the next time he shows up. Walk him to the door and wish him good luck. Perhaps then he will think about it. Apparently he does not take this oportunity seriously.

Tell him the next time he doesn't show as scheduled you'll consider it his resignation. Make him fire himself - that's a good lesson for a kid.

It's a tough call Jesse. You've put up with it quite a while already. But I do like the idea of telling the kid the next time he doesn't show up or on time, that you'll consider it his resignation. Leaving the burden on him.

Blame it on who you choose, but I remember my Dad saying the same thing about his co-workers when I was a kid. And that was more than 50 years ago.

I figured you get to that decision. Then again, you're the boss and keeping or canning someone should be on your shoulders - not anybody elses. It's part of the job.

Too bad for the kid. You are always helpful to others on this forum. He could of learned a trade working with you. Maybe he got tired of working on vettes and really prefers Mustangs!!!

Can't say I blame you, Jesse. And I will say that the work ethic of kids today is not what it was even ten years ago. In my classes I talk up work ethic all the time and try to instill what it is. I hope that you can find someone who you can trust.
