    Next up...

this man was an actor, singer and songwriter who was a cast member of an early to mid- 70's tv show. His philosophy was to get a kick out of life and he was good to have around in case of an emergency.

    No... not Paul Williams.
He also served in the US Marines in WWII as a Captain.

Ok... a few hints; read back over that last sentence in the post with the photo. There are 2 key words in that sentence that point straight to the only individual to whom both relate.
Also, he was only a moderately successful songwriter, not one of the typical Top 40 artists.
His biggest songwriting success was made famous by Nat King Cole.
He's a real trooper in an Emergency!

Nope. Dang! I'm sorry guys - my hints probably aren't helping at all!

    Mystery man 03-09-12_002.jpg

    OK -

wrote his biggest song in 1946
got the idea for it on a roadtrip from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles
it was first covered by Nat King Cole
and after that by Perry Como, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, The Manhatten Transfer, Depeche Mode and most recently by John Mayer on a movie soundtrack in 2006

if no one has gotten it when I return from an appointment, I'll name him then.

Give that man a Kewpie doll!

Bobby Troup played Dr. Joe Early in the hit T.V. drama Emergency!

He also wrote (Get Your Kicks On) Rt. 66 in 1946 after a cross country roadtrip; it was first recorded by the Nat King Cole Trio.

The producers of television show Route 66 commissioned a new theme song because they wanted to avoid making royalty payments for Troup's song.
The 2006 Disney/Pixar film Cars depicts Route 66 as a forgotten and faded piece of America, rediscovered by the main character. The film was originally to have been called "Route 66", and the film's soundtrack includes the popular Chuck Berry version and the Grammy nominated "update version" by modern blues rock artist John Mayer.
    Take it away Tom!

    (Kidney stone = ouch!)
