    Default Photo Software

I'm looking into photo editing software for windows, any suggestions. I have the disk that came with my new camera but have not loaded it yet and surely its just basics.

You are right concerning the editing software included with most cameras. It is usually pretty basic allowing you to do only a few things. Some cameras and scanners have older versions of Photoshop Elements included as part of the bundle.

Photoshop, either the full-scale pro version CS3 or Elements, is the most widely used and supported photo editing software out there. Elements is reasonably priced at about $99 or so. The full-scale pro version is usually around $600!

There are others out there as well. Before taking the plunge maybe buy a few digital photo magazines and read about the different choices. The magazines are certainly cheaper than buying a piece of software that you may not like.

elements is probably what you want.

    other than that there is:

The Gimp (GNU Image Manipulation Program?) which is open source, free, but has a steep learning curve and probably is a little overkill. It will also need a liiiitttlle bit of knowhow to get working.

JASC Paintshop Pro is also a cheaper version of Photoshop and has many of the same features.

I'd go elements myself, it's relatively basic but it will get the job done right for most photo-editing tasks (refining and manipulation). Photoshop is more of a graphic design tool imho.
