Question C4s with different targa tops

I have a 96 and found that it's targa top is not interchangeable with that of an 85. My 96 is a Collector's Edition. Could this be the reason?

If I recall correctly the tops are not interchangeable. From 84 to mid 86 they had one type of attachment. Then mid 86 to I believe the end of the run (not really sure) they had a different type of attachment. You can do a search and it will probably give you the correct dates when it changed. I do know that an early 84 will not fit my 88.

Oh yeah, welcome to CAC. You'll like it around here.

    Yep.
The early targa tops have the front alignment points and bolts in a different place. Probably changed for better leak preventation and/or stiffness of the roof and structure.

    Default A more exact answer.

To help you determine exactly which top you need measure the distance between the two mounting bolts in the front windshield and see below.

    28 1/2" = 84' to early 86'
    31 1/2" = late 86' to 88'
    32 1/2" = 89' to 96'

Moreover the tops for the series above would be interchangeable.

is not that ur car is a gs..the reason is the bolts on the front windshield frame varies from diferent years (how far apart they are from each other) ..dont remeber exactly what years but i do know there are 3 different types of tops..check out eckllers cataloge i remeber seeing the exact years for the different types of targa tops
