Help! Collapsible steering shaft, service needed?

(This post is not about a telescoping steering wheel)

(This post is not about a telescoping steering wheel)

Per observation by C4C5Specialist, it seems that my steering shaft has shifted forward ever so slightly that it's now causing my u-joint to bind which significantly increases steering effort to the point I don't really like driving the car. (Keep in mind I have a rack & pinion now, not the OEM setup)

For those that can reference the 1980 service manual, the break out diagram is on page 3B4-19.

I was told by another person that the steering shaft on the 80's was collapsible for reasons of crash safety. And that it's possible that whatever allows the shaft to collapse has failed and now the shaft has shifted forward or has enough play in it that it moves back and forth causing the binding in the u-joint.

What kind of job am I looking at to remedy the issue?
Anyone else ever had this problem or even heard of it? I suppose it's a rare issue because the original steering setup likely wouldn't be impacted by slight movement, but I have the rack & pinion with additional u-joints, so it's causing a problem.

I've tried to use three differents Dwell meters to check my carb -81. Can someone recommend one that you actually know will work? Since I live in Sweden, I would prefer if you can give me a link where I can buy it online (Ebay or a vendor).

I've been following this forum for a long time and your tips have helped me a lot to fix my ECM. :) I'm now fixing the last thing (the idle) on my E4ME. That's why I need a working Dwell meter.

I have a 82 coupe with its original crossfire which has had a surging idle for the past few years. Lately it will idle so low it dies. Sitting still it bounces back and forth from almost dying to a fast idle for a short time then dies. It has a even rythym to the flucuation in rpms. Low/high low/high low/high. It is even starting to die while driving slow on road. Any Ideas??? Thanks:)

Help! Engine dies - fuel system or ignition?

Have a 74 big block - have had no previous problems, but while cruising along at 30 mph yesterday the engine just abruptly died. Pulled over and tried to restart, and it took for ever to fire. Revved it up and held it at 2500 rpm for about 30 seconds to clear it out, but when I slowly allow the rpm to drop anywhere below 2000, it coughs and dies. Then hard to restar again, then same routine. At 2500 rpm or greater, runs fine, so does not appear to be a fuel supply issue. Drop it to 2000, and it slowly sputters, then dies.

Note: ignition was serviced about 4 months ago - new points, condenser, distributor cap, and new shielded wires. No problem since then - until this occurred.

Ideas?

After reading in my shop manual, it says I cannot adjust the idling because it adjusts...

After reading in my shop manual, it says I cannot adjust the idling because it adjusts automatically. The only way I can get the car to idle well is by turning on the A/C, which increases it from 500 RPMs to 1000 RPMs. It idles at 500 RPMs normally and it almost dies. It also idles a little rough. I have replaced the entire ignition system, pvc valve. Can anyone lead me in the right direction to improve my idle. Sometimes when it bogs down and idles rough I can smell gasoline, so it may have an issue with the air/gas mixture, which again is automatic. Once you rev up the engine the mixture seems to fix itself. Any thoughts? I'm getting a little frustrated.

Hi All - As long as I've owned my 81, it has had an EXTREMELY rough idle. It runs so smooth otherwise when I'm driving it I never really gave it much attention to fix. But now I'm kind of tired sitting there at lights looking like I have a drag racing cam in the car. I've put new carb on it and the problem is the same so I'm thinking it may be a significant vacuum leak but for the life of me I can't find one. How does one test for such things? Its a bit worse now also because when I go to take off I get this significant hesitation which I believe is because there is a surge of air without comparable fuel (just like a big vacuum leak). Any suggestions?

When I apply the brakes it pulls hard to the left, and when I ease off the pedal it pulls to the right. after a minute or two the pull to the right goes away. The sequence repeats each time I brake. It also seems that right front brake may not be releasing as the car does not roll as easily as it used to. I have had the car 4 years. The rear brakes have been done but nothing done to the fronts.

I took the plunge and swapped out my 3.36 gears for a set of 3.70. Since most of my driving is cruising, the few hundred extra rpm's on the freeway don't' bother me much.
Except that my speedometer is now off. Showing 70 it is actrually 60 (using GPS).
I have a saginaw tranny, so which speedometer gear do I need to swap out to correct the MPH? I see that Eckler's sells them, but I can't find a guide or formula to know which one to get. :W
Help!

Greetings. My name is Marshall and I'm completely new to Corvette owndership. I bought my very nicely restored 1981 Corvette a little over a week ago. I have two questions. First of all, it is my understanding that the car came with a factory alarm system. My car did not come with an owner's manual so I have no idea whether it works or not. How do I activate and operate it? Secondly, I have noticed that in reverse (it has a 4 speed manual transmission) the reverse lights flicker on and off. Am I accurate in assuming this would be a reverse switch and if so, where do I locate it?
Thank you for any guidance you can give me. I'm excited to finally be a Corvette owner.
