GM parts plant boosts gas mileage for Corvettes, Silverados

You buy a Corvette or Silverado, it’s generally understood you’re going to get a powerful engine that lets you beat most anything on the road or haul a lot of heavy stuff — the tradeoff usually being mediocre gas mileage.

But General Motors Co. looks to change that using a growing stream of parts coming out of its Lexington Avenue plant that are the backbone of a new generation of more fuel efficient engines.

The 2014 Corvette coming out later this year with a 6.2-liter V-8 LT1 engine, looks to be the most fuel-efficient Corvette ever, doing better than 26 miles to the gallon. And according to GM, the 2014 Silverado 1500, which will start coming off assembly lines this summer, will have better gas mileage than any other V-8 light-duty pickup or Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged V-6 engine.

A new TV spot for the GMC Sierra full-size pickup shows the truck's ability to be pulled in all directions by four mooring winches. What the ad doesn't show is that the truck was subjected to this abuse 46 times and still drove away from the set none the worse for wear.
