GM revives performance mission

DETROIT -- The high-performance group at General Motors Co. has a broader mission again -- with a...

DETROIT -- The high-performance group at General Motors Co. has a broader mission again -- with a marketing veteran in charge who is eager to develop powerful small cars.

"We have a tremendous opportunity in the small and compact car market," said Jim Campbell, who was shifted last week to the new position of vice president of GM's performance vehicles and motorsports. He was moved over when GM marketing boss Joel Ewanick hired Chris Perry from Hyundai to run Chevrolet marketing.

On the eve of its trip through federal bankruptcy court last year, GM put development of high-performance small cars on ice.

GM now is considering expanding its performance line to its small cars, such as the four-cylinder Chevrolet Cruze as well as the next-generation Chevrolet Aveo. The Cruze goes on sale in the fall.

"Small cars and compact cars are going to be more and more important going forward, and we're looking at efficient performance," said Campbell, who has experience working with GM's NASCAR, American Le Mans Series and Grand-Am Road Racing teams. "We will work with those teams to provide performance variants."

Campbell said the performance division will "cross all brands" at GM but the primary emphasis will be on Chevrolet and Cadillac. While Campbell's division is not yet defined, he said he will build his own organization drawing from other GM departments.

Campbell will coordinate the performance-vehicle efforts at GM's marketing, engineering and performance parts and accessories departments.

The moves are led by North American boss Mark Reuss, who was executive director of the performance division from 2001 to 2005. It's also a reversal from the pre-bankruptcy days at GM when its High Performance Vehicles Operations unit was axed, and GM reassigned 60 engineers who had worked on special-edition, low-volume performance cars, such as V-Series vehicles for Cadillac and SS vehicles for Chevrolet, at the tech center outside Detroit.

At the time, GM said all performance projects were on "indefinite hold."

With the division strengthened, GM can look at some projects that were previously put on ice. "This is much better from an organizational perspective," Reuss wrote in an e-mail. "It's people working for a common goal under one strategic direction."

In marketing, Campbell said the aim is to improve the image of each brand.

He said: "If you come in and see a V-Series, you might not buy it, but you might consider something else" in the Cadillac showroom.
The Woodward Dream Cruise, a parade of tail-finned sedans and rumbling muscle cars, celebrates Americans' love affair with their automobiles -- the bigger and more flamboyant, the better.

But in recent years, the classic and vintage cars in the procession have seemed like the last remnants of a vanished era of prosperity. The industry -- and southeastern Michigan -- sank deeper each year. Last August, General Motors Co., which was getting by on government funds, skipped the event.

But this year, the Dream Cruise seems more festive, with car enthusiasts heartened by signs of the industry's renewal as well as its fabulous heritage.

Sierra Denali, Silverado HD Models Win Heavy Duty Shootout

DETROIT – The new 2011 Sierra Denali 3500HD and the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD took top honors in their respective segments of PickupTrucks.com’s Heavy-Duty Shootout, beating their competitors from Ford and Dodge.

There were strong accolades for both vehicles from Mike Levine, founder of PickupTrucks.com in the website’s release.

“We could tow with a Sierra Denali all day long and feel as confident driving it as it looks good on the road. This amazing truck took the top spot in four of six power contests and was close behind in two more,” he said following a series of comprehensive tests that included loaded and unloaded:

> Quarter mile drag runs
> 7 percent grade and 16 percent grade hill climbs
> Brake tests, fuel economy and ride and handling testing.

“The Chevy’s combination of the powerful Duramax diesel, all-new frame and suspension and excellent fuel economy put it ahead of the Ford and Ram trucks,” Levine said.

General Motors Co. is planning for the return of $4-plus gasoline by introducing small or compact cars for each of its brands -- even GMC.

GM continues to predict gasoline prices will eventually rise to levels last seen in 2008, when consumers fled light trucks for smaller vehicles.

Also, federal fuel-efficiency standards will rise to a fleet average of 35.5 mpg in the 2016 model year, compared with 27.3 mpg in 2011.

The emphasis on fuel efficiency includes Cadillac with the ATS compact car, due in the 2013 or 2014 model year.

At Buick, GM will introduce the Verano compact car in the 2012 model year and probably will give the LaCrosse sedan a hybrid to continue the fuel economy theme.

Even the GMC brand, traditionally known for its trucks, will get smaller. A production version of the Granite concept, built on a compact-car platform, is expected to come to market in 2013.

Chevrolet will continue to add smaller vehicles. The Aveo subcompact debuts in mid-2011 with production at Orion Township, Mich. The Spark minicar comes to market in 2012. Even the Impala, whose redesign is timed for the 2014 model year, will get a few inches smaller.

Here are GM's plans for the 2011-13 model years, according to sources inside GM and in the industry: http://www.autonews.com/assets/PDF/CA7064984.PDF
