    Default 04 Stock Zo6 Runs 1/4 Mi

I just bought the October 2004 issue of GM High-Tech Performance magazine where they tested a bone stock 04 Quick Silver ZO6. Forget about crummy Road and Track, and seemingly, generous Motortrend 0-60 times and 1/4 mi. times that have been printed. These guys in GMHTP took the ZO6 through the paces.
Get this, 0-60mph in 3.91 seconds. The 1/4mi time was an astounding 11.97sec. @ 118.8mph. I glad someone has gone out to really find out, especially on stock tires what the Z is capable of. In a 200ft circle, the Z also posted .98g clockwise, and 1.02g counterclockwise. The bidirectional average is a solid 1.00g, what GM has been telling us all along. I guess 150k for a Ford GT is definitely too much to spend, when you are currently driving a car that posts similar numbers for a third of the price. A grin, and a big thumbs up for the ZO6! Makes me all warm inside!

    EDIT:
Oh ya forgot, P.S. go out and get the magazine, great article on the whole day testing and hammering the 04 ZO6.

    Todd,

I think I'll head out tomorrow and pick that magazine up.

I at those who compare a $140K+ limited edition, supercharged Ford to a mass produced NA $50K Corvette. If they want to compare it, put one of those Lingenfelter superchargers in the Vette' for $10K installed and that thing would outrun the GT with $80K to buy a Viper.

sub-4.00 0-60 times? sub 12.00 quarters? I just don't believe it. These are well off even the most optomistic times I've seen by quite a bunch. What were the conditions of the test?

I am a Vette lover thru and thru but that test smells of a ringer car in the tradition of the 60's.

Ok, Ok, I hear ya. To start off with, these guys really had better conditions than most of the mags. Motortrend tested the Z06 and C6 in their latest issue at an elevation of 1000' above sealevel, on a just previously rain soaked road @ 90 degress ambient. Hey, to me, it's not the way to introduce the new Corvette, and another test on another ZO6 in less than ideal conditions, the way the magazine put it. They could have picked a dry day atleast . Ha, Ha, they will print it that way in the road test summary like it is gospel. I have enough cars riding my butt, I don't need more drivers to think 4.8 to sixty is doable, even though we know better, it's more like 4.0 sec. to sixty. In the Vette mag. article, the conditions were clear, bright sunshine at sealevel, off the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey. Outdoor temperature 55 degrees F. The date was March 22, 2004, about the same time I got my vette out, lol! These guys had permission on a 4000 mile 04' Z, to torcher this beast. A quote from the magazine says, "This is the first GM vehicle that I'm proud to say that I could easily kill myself in-and that, my friends, is a good thing." The fastest time posted was not the only run as you have figured, but the slowest posted time was 12.29 sec. @ 117.03 mph. That's not bad out of four different runs. The guy launched the car from 3200rpm, (think I'll verify that myself, ! ) most of the time. The reaction times were average at 1.9 sec. The test weight was 3074lbs. with a half tank of gas, without the driver.

Thrilling isn't it? Wheel hop was their arch nemesis in the quarter, on stock tires no less. Here's more on the story, direct from their website.

Interesting article. I still stand by the fact it was a ringer though. Cool looking car in that silver color.

    HI there,
I can tell you first hand I have seen a stock 03 Zo6 run quarters at Englishtown NJ at 11.94 and 11.96 respectively in September of last year.
It is possible and with NO mods and street tires.
Its all down to drivers and conditions.

    MoeJr,
Back in the day, we used to refer to that sort of car as a factory 'freak'. The term got to be overused. Everyone thought their car must have been one. Truth is, in reading these forums, I've come across a couple of Z owners displaying time slips in the 11's. Question is, are the cars bone stock? Well, I can't answer that. I haven't had mine in the 11's but it is probably more capable of doing it without me as a driver, but it has been in the mid 12's on stock tires so I don't personally claim the 11's are out of the realm of possibility. Now, to more important issues - is that bar open? I'm buying!

I have seen bone stock Z-06s touch the 11s at Raceway Park. Low 12s were by the far the average. I dont remeber any with the stock tires though.

I have also dusted some Z-06s in my pokey auto trans 95 coupe. (13.4) It does take practice to put that power to the road without going up in smoke. I know as I was pulling away the Z-06 drivers were staring at the "ASR Active" message flashing.

Well people have seen it in person that is good enough for me. Me thinks GM is pulling an L88 with the Z06 HP ratings which means the C6 Z should be a true viper killer.

Yes the bar is open and I'll take a ginger ale(sorry don't drink).

Ginger ale it is and I'll join you for one. The first drive in a Z06 is very reminiscent of the L88 in a lot of ways. Just not as much 'torque feel' as the big block. Replacing it is a feeling of 'quick' that instantly results in wide grins. I agree with you that the C6 Z06 will likely be a missile!

Ah, nice to see Tony and the rest of you guys reading this thread. I think a ZO6 could run solid elevens on slicks all day long. I know like most of you that our cars are not stock. I don't think the car was a ringer, but had alot of dense cool air and found some traction. I was surprised that the car ran below 12.3 sec. out of all the runs made everytime, especially hitting the rev. limiter in first and second on the first "throw away" run. The driver was definitely a powershifting nut. John Henricy an engineer with GM that helped develope the ZO6 has run 4.0 sec to sixty, so 3.9 doesn't surprise me. 0-60 times can be pretty low considering that the car will do 69 mph in second. I've powershifted my car. Between first and second she will definitely break loose until she finds some traction. Talk about a fishtail........omg hold on! My father drove my car and was getting on the highway in fifth about 55mph, I said Dad, drop it down to third and get on it. Damn, we almost put her in the woods. He was white knuckle from then on, saying, "Wow, this thing is really viscious." Have to love that comment lol!
