    Default SinkHole Vette Picture

You might have heard about this story on Network TV: In August 2002, heavy rains caused a drainage pipe to rupture under a restaurant parking lot in Hickory, NC. Two holes opened, swallowing a 2002 Corvette Coupe. The bridge between them later collapsed, forming a crater about 120 feet wide and 40 feet deep. From a nearby storm drain, on the first night you could hear the car alarm going off.

The national spin on this story was: a Corvette was swallowed by a sink hole! Any other type of car and the story would not have made it past the local media. Goes to show you the prestige our cars have!

The remains were finally dug out 5 months later under more than 50 feet of dirt and muck. The cars body was smashed down to the level of the tires. The only exterior sections that have been found is the rear bumper, with license plate attached, that showed up in a storm drain line several blocks away.

The remains are now on display at the new and improved parking lot.

See attached. Chose your parking spaces wisely and ride in pride!

    WOW!

    At least they found it.
In our most recent bout of tornados here in OK, some of the vehicles from the GM plant workers haven't been seen yet!

UPDATE: tankman's Eagle eyes are correct! The rear rider-side tire is on the wheel wrong side out! The Goodyear EMT direction of travel arrows are pointing the wrong way. Does not look like it has been torn-off and stuck back on by the contractor. Rear-end still in tack. No way GM could have grabed two driver-side rears by mistake? Will do a little investigating and report here. Has anyone else had their factory tires installed incorrectly?

I posted that story in the humor or off road section a couple of months ago. It made it into The NY Post "weird but true section"
Apparently the guy was having breakfast admiring his Vette from the window of the diner when it disappeared. I don't know if that is the car from the story or something they reconstructed from the wreck but in any case it sure would spoil my meal.

Actually the guy was at the bar having drinks during happy hour while their was a down-pour going on outside. Someone ran into the restaurant screaming about the parking lot caving-in, everyone had to exit out the kitchen door into the rain and darkness. Do not think he figured out what had happened for a while.

Wonder if the Post was using The Times Journalistic Ethics when creating that story.
