Do i have an electrical problem?

mornin all - I have already asked this Q to a 99 owner & did not get the answer I was hoping for so I'll put it out to all of you just to clarify - I just bought a 99 C5 - when I turn on the PARKING LIGHTS, the headlight doors open - the headlamps don't come on but the doors are open - the owners manual is not clear if this is correct but I suspect that it is not -

Are the headlight doors supposed to open when just the parking lights are turned on?

I'm thinking I have a problem with the multifunction switch but don't know that for sure -

would appreciate any info - I normally always drive with my parking lights on but having the doors open really bugs me -

hmm shouldnt your DRL's ( parking lights : Daytime running lights ) be on anyways without having to select parking lights ?

shawn - No, the headlights are not on first - the manual is clear about that aspect of it -
when the light switch is off & I turn on the parking lights only, the headlight doors open -

as far as i know, the DTR's are the front marker lights only -

I do not have a C5, but this functionality does not sound correct. The way shawnfate has described is how my C4 operates.

I've got a 98 and no, if you turn on the "Parking Lights" only, the headlights shouldn't swing up.

Sorry but I don't have any suggestions as to what may cause this.
Maybe one of our more knowledgeable members will step in soon with more info.

mornin all - after searching through many threads I found what I believe is the answer & will leave here as it was really hard to find - came across it using the keyword "multifunction switch" - & it has nothiing to do with the switch - go figure - EVIDENTLY if one of the headlight door actuators goes bad, stripped gear as usual, this sends bad electrical data, ie current or amp load data to the computer - bad info in, bad info out - so the comp tells the headlight doors to open when the switch is moved to the parking light position - & I thought the vacuume actuators were a pain in the butt - anyway, things should go back to normal when I replace the headlight motor - we'll see - D.

Hey D, you may be on the right track... I thought I remembered having something similar with my headlights in the recent past so I went through a search of my old threads and came up with this one:

I hope it helps with your troubleshooting. Keep us in the loop and post your findings. The newest C5s are almost 7 years old now and more issues are going to present themselves soon.

Maybe we should start a list.

May sound silly but I'd just take a road trip over to Old Fort NC and see Junkie .Hell It's only 1200 miles for me when I have a problem .My wife calls my cell phone after a couple days wanting to know where I am .I just say" I told ya I was going to get the car serviced and I'll be home in a few days.
