Default auto climate control

anytime i put climate control on auto the ac light comes on. even when using heater and not using defrost. is this normal?

Mine does the same thing. The AC light will be on until the outside temp gets into the 30's or so. Hopefully, someone with a little more knowledge on the subject will comment soon.

The automatic climate control system will use the A/C to get moisture out of the air to reduce windsheild fogging under certain conditions. I think there is a more complete explanation in the owners manual.
