Default C5 ashtray mod

Anyone ever seen a mod for the ashtray, which I don't use anymore, so it could be used for small storage, etc.?

I had the remote valentine radar detector put in there..

I have also seen the gtech competition pro put in there..

I probably would go with the gtech competition pro in there were I to do it again..

Cool three stage shift light on that piece..

Mines mounted behind the left hand side behind the inspection sticker velcro'd to the dash..

Works cool but the ashtray install looked better..IMHO

Good for learning 60 ft times too.

I mounted my remote garage door opener in mine, just took out the little circuit board an velcroed it to the ash tray guts..... Completely hidden from view.

Excellent idea - fumbling around the console for mine really ticks me off sometimes. This was obviously WAY too simple of a good idea to be thought of by the likes of me

I think I even have some velcro in the toolbox!

I also put a garage door opener in the ash tray. I bought a pocket fob opener at Sears and it fits in the ash tray just fine. The only time it's a problem is when I have my cell phone in the cup holder.

Default some good idears

I had broken the piece around the cig. lighter because of my radar dector plug in. Are there any other idears that will work under the cover. I have been trying to think of something that will cover the hole area, lighter and ashtray holes. I realy don't use any of the things you have mention. Come on guys keep it comming. Thanks Frank

Hi mrgil -

I have seen some that have converted the cig lighter to operate a garage door opener - it is wired in behind the ashtray housing - you just hit the lighter and your garage door opens. I though that was cool - but I just have mine on my visor - no problem there.

For the original poster - I have not seen a mod that would put a storage bin in place of the ashtray - that would be a good mod - particularly if it were fairly easy to replace the butt-box.

I personally think that the ash tray should be a "pay" option on cars - if you want one, then you BUY one - and I don't have to buy it without a choice...

I know of some who have moved the HVAC head unit down to the ashtray areas, and then installed other devices in the void left byu the HVAC. There are several options to eliminate the butt-box.

best regards -

No it wasn't easy! - 6 months and counting for me and my wife. I guess if our marriage survived this, it can survive anything! I never smoked in my Vette anyway becuase I hate the way cigarette smoke makes cars smell.

Hi Blade -

Exactly - that IS what is was made for - and I would be willing to bet only one in 50 corvettes ever look like that (if that).

I still submit that the ashtray should be an additional cost option for those who want this "feature" next to them in the cabin.

I wonder why they don't install barf-bowls on the center console for drunks...kinda the same deal IMO.

Not an anti-smoker - folks should do what they wish. not a problem for me, just don't try to light a cancer-stick in my car - then it's on...

best regards -

Default Smoking Vettes

Smoking in a Corevette makes about as much sense as chitting in Your bathtub.

Ok, I smoke in my Vette, get over it, but never would you see that in ANY car I drive.
Blade if that's for real you should have kept it to yourself. No offense, but a new AE treated like that? Yuck!!!

Hi Joe -

You can take dumps in your vette if 'ya want to - no skin off of my butt.

I hope you aren't telling me to "get over it". [edit - I think you were talking to the other fellow...]

My point - Ashtray = extra cost option for those who use/want it - for the vast majority of us THAT DON'T - there could be a CD holder, or storage cubby etc.

I wonder why someone at GM has not thought this out?

No offense intended to you - and I support your right to smoke in your car or anywhere else for that matter. Doesn't bother me at all.

I too noticed that Blade's car was a AE...and I can appreciate that smoking could be done and not make a huge mess in the car - it would just be the smoke odor in there.

Where I work, the militant non-smokers (usually reformed nicotine addicts) insisted that there be separate coat cabinents for smokers coats to avoid the smell leach. Seriously...Sometimes it just gets out of hand.

best regards -
