GM assumes that the LS3 in an Impala will not be driven as aggressively as will the LS1 in a Corvette, thus, the oil temperature ranges will be lower. With a lower oil temperature history, the engine doesn't need a synthetic oil to meet durability targets.

Are you better off switching your Impala to M1?

Well...if you drive the car hard, you drive it in a lot of hot weather or you intend to keep the car for a long time, you may see some benefit.

There has been some references to best oil filters. I usually use the GM filter, but last time we drained changed the oil out and opened the new GM filter, it was damaged.

The shop had some Bosch filters but no GM. I decided to go with the Bosch. So far no sign of problems, but curious if anyone has any negative feedback on Bosch filters. From now on I'll take two oil filters with me.

    Thanks...
