Hi Richard, Doug from next door here (Middleville). Welcome to CAC
Your post asked what oil to use next spring, you probably should have changed it before putting it in storage don't you think?
I use Mobile-1 10W30 with a Wix filter in all my vehicles and change it at 5K.
Seems soon but it is cheap insurance.

The General did not think it was cost effective, the cost of maintenance is a selling point to some regardless of what is better.

It always seems to be a hot topic when it comes down to oil. I think HIb has presented very good information as always in his salty way. I have always used Mobil-1 5W/30 and a Mobil-1 filter on my 2003 LS1. Here in Pennsylvania we usually have a harsh winter but this year it's been mild. I could switch to 10W/30, I'm not sure if it would extend the engines life, but I'm no oil expert in any way of fashion. The owners manual in my 2003 says to use 5W/30 oil that meets GM4718M, so when I take it up for it's annual state inspection & oil change I take 7 quarts of the Mobil-1 5w/30 and a Mobil filter, I bought a case of them. I only change the oil once a year as I rarely drive more than 5000 miles per year. But I bought a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix GT which has a 3800 series 3 V6 with a self-oiling Eaton M90 supercharger and it like the one CAC members Monte Carlo, it only specifies a conventional oil 5W/30. But I switched it over to Mobil-1 5W/30 oil in it as well and again with a Mobil-1 filter and change twice a year as I drive about 7000 miles a year. Even though the oil life monitor never get to the waring point. Perhaps I'm wasting the oil and filter, but when I was in the service the mechanics in my battalion always said an engine can never get clean enough oil & filters. But they mostly worked on the Diesel trucks and other construction equipment.

A lot of folks will argue that Amsoil is the only real synthetic Motor oil worth using, Why is I guess they buy into the MLM deal that Amsoil runs ? But I recently came across a list of the 'New' GM specified Dexos oils. And if you page down the two pages you'll see more oils I never even knew were made, but Mobil-1 5W/30 is a approved oil as is Quaker State and Pennzoil Platinum oils that I recognized. I'm not sure why General Motors company designed this list as a specific list of oils for their automobile line-up. But I guess I'd switch over to Mobil-1 10W/30 if I lived in Miami Beach, but here in Pennsylvania I think I'm better off with the mobil-1 as is. People get into some real heated debates over oil and I can't see why ? You never see folks arguing over coolant ? Most all new cars use DexCool and you swap it out every five years. But here at CAC you can get a little more factual information without the hype you find at a lot of other websites. Rob and the moderators do a great job.

Last week, on a trip to MI to interview various folks at GM Powertrain, I learned that Mobil 1 is no longer factory fill on all Corvettes.

LS3s without the dry sump, get an engine oil which meets the new Dexos specification but it's not a Mobil 1 branded product.

Only LS3 dry sump motors, LS7s and LS9s are factory filled with Mobil 1.

Thanks for the post Hib. It'll probably only take a decade or two for all the Vette owners who have been bowing down to the holy oil M1, to realize that these original fill deals are FINANCIAL first and foremost, then maybe what's best for the engine. Not that it's a BAD oil (well the zddp content is way down) but there are other better oils.

I suppose GM's decision to use a Dexos spec oil in it's typical small-block V8 engines, including the LS3 wet sump engines, rather than a Mobil 1 branded product, is based in part on cost. But, it also may be based on the company's want to get more Dexos oils in the public's "eye".

The fact that Mobil 1–and all oil which meets GF4 or API Service SL/SM/SN–has somewhat less ZDDP is irrelevant to modern engines. Yes, it's an issue for pre-1987 Corvette engines with flat tappet camshafts or any engine with an aftermarket flat tappet cam, but there are a plethora of solutions to that, the least expensive of which are diesel engine oils such as Chevron Delo 400LE 10W30 and Shell Rotella T 10W30.

Looks like Mobil 1 has already been 'qualified' as a "dexos1" licensed oil... It would appear that GM could use it as a factory fill for LS3 'wet-sump' Corvettes...

If nearly every major synthetic oil brand on the market (including Mobil 1) already qualifies, what exactly does it prove to have the "dexos" license...? Sounds suspiciously like another "New GM" eco-marketing gimmick to me...

Wow...I bet you have tons of friends ...anyway, thats a preetty rude thing to point out...I'm sure he has many friends and I am sure you will come back with a statement to smoothe things over ...Hib is 100% correct... he is very similar to ET...who cares if he has any listed friends? He gives free help and advice and it is sound advice...unlike lots of aholes here who think they are mechanics because they can change oil
Oh yea...btw...Mobil 1 10W30 is what to use...
