Default GM high performance timing chain kit known to make noise ?

Installed a GM 12370835 High performance timing chain kit in my -96 LT1 car but now I have a very irritating noise

Anyone using this chain and know if it is supposed to make a lot of noise ?

The noise I get is like something scratching against a surface. I have removed everything a couple of times replaced the optispark and even painted the cover black on the inside to be sure to spot if anything is hitting but to no avail.

I removed the belt and ran the engine for a very short time and the noise is still there. Using a mechanics 'stetoscope' I can pinpoint the noise to the crankshaft area, the area around the cam is quiet.

    What to do ?

Sounds like you've done the critical checks - looking for scratch marks, etc., maybe the chain does make more noise.

Hey, you can always tell people that is has a gear drive instead of a chain.

I am asuming that this is the extreme duty set.
Did you swap out the original waterpump drive gear with the one that came with the kit? If you used the original gear then that is where your noise is comming from. I learned this from my own experience with my extreme duty set. Thought it would'nt matter if I used the origional w/p drive gear after all they are a pain to change. Engine sounded terrible & drove me crazy. I have since gone with an elec. w/p & removed the w/p drive completely. & all is quiet agian.

Is the noise a low pitched thud sorta of noise, but not a knock maybe like a rumbeling base drum?

I had a noise like that at the front of my motor but never could find out what it was .
After a few runs with the nitrous the noise went away.
