Default Free Mods on a Vette....

    Howdy all.
Can someone tell me what the "free" mods are to a 93 Vette. Ive heard people talking about things you can do for free but never actualy heard what the actual modification was and I am wondering. Thanks in advance.

K&N Filter, with open lid. You take a dremel or some tin snips and cut the air lid open so all of the filter is exposed.

TB bypass, you remove the two coolant hoses on either side of the TB and mate them together with a pipe and two clamps, or whatever you think will work.

That's all there is to the TB Bypass?? I was looking at those hoses today, and wondering if it was that simple.. What was the purpose of GM putting that setup in???

GM routed coolant thru the TB to keep the plates from freezing in cold weather. It must be damned cold for that to happen, and most people in Montana or Alaska dont drive their vettes in winter, nevermind the fact that it cant happen once the engine is warmed up.

At any other times it hurts performance by increasing the temperature of the intake charge (by conduction it heats up the plenum as well), cooler air=hp so most people disconnect it.

Ok, so that's all there is to it? Get a small pc of pipe/union and join the two lines??? Sounds too easy

Huh?? Is an LT1 suddenly normally thought of as unmodifiable?

Not really but a gain of only 5 hp, doesn't do a thing for me. The only modification l would do is change the rear from a 3.07 to a 3.73. Now this will get your attention!

The rest of the simple mods, in my opinion are for people that drag their cars against the clock.

    Just my humble opinion.

Your right... I'm not getting excited over the potential 5 HP gain, but, think about it, normally HP isn't that 'easy' to come by, so the thought of gaining some simply by putting two lines together sounds kind of odd!! So, for the 5 minutes it'd take to splice the two, I'd say that'd be worth it, especially since my car's a fair weather vehicle anyways....

    Hi Jeff

If you think about all of those claims of horse power gains in all the catalogs that you read, you would wind up with a 450hp vette. Most of the claims could be true under certain conditions, but in the real world they are only smoke and mirrors. l would not change the TB bypass for a gain of 5hp if that much.

The technicians who put it there, did so for a reason, and not for the cold weather states only!

Enjoy your vette, maintain it, keep it clean and you will be a happy guy. What we drive is not a precision auto, like a Porsche,
it's only an American Hot Rod that we love.

Well put. I think your right, when you put it that way. If we were to do like you said, and put on all the mods in the magazines, with stated fuel economy gains, my tank would NEVER need filling, in fact, it'd be spilling over.. My K&N Filter and open lid gave me 37 HP and helped me get 45MPG.

And of course, GM's engineers are totally infallible and have supreme intelligence.

    DOH!

Ok, let me ask you guys this... Has anyone done a dyno, or 1/4 mile run before/after doing this mod? Numbers don't lie... I'm fairly new to the Vette world, so pardon the questions... I've OWNED my Vette since last October, but, it's been in hibernation since

    Default Empire Strikes Back!!

    Hi Darth Vader

l guess we no w know you went to the dark side.

All of the automotive company's put together cars to make money first. They also design into their cars a shelf life, unlike other countries that design their cars to last.

Yes, the american market screwed up the entire car world when they used to change their cars on a yearly basis. Then they realized that the the european cars remained the same for years except minor updates. This held their resale value's at a higher percentage then our auto's.

Now we change our body styles maybe every 5-8yrs, with yearly updates.

lf you've been to Europe in the 80's through the late 90's, you will have noticed that they have cars that they do not import into the states, and just recycle their cars with new parts that are readily available.

The old story if you take for example a Corvette and break it down part by part, you would throw up at how much it would cost to build it from the tires up.

This is how auto makers make their profits in spades. The profits on selling new cars is marginal at best. The dealership only makes money by selling add on's which l'm sure you are aware of. They even charge $175 to get your plates and registration. Try and tell them that you will do it!

I see...Dont you think that 5 or 10 minutes of time for "5" HP is a good deal?...If it was a simple modifcation that only gave me 1 hp that took 2 weeks I would still do it, just for the sure fact that I can be around and be working on my Vette and have pride in it. That is what makes it worth it to me. Thats my opinion tho....Peace
