My Corvette(s): 1990 Steel Blue Metallic Coupe | Half dollar size speakers in 90
I've been reading in the background for sometime and have gained great knowledge from this forum. Thank you all very much. I don't own a vette yet, been shopping and reading (here for quite a while) and now looking seriously at a 90. When I drove it, I noticed two, what look like speakers, mounted on the front, vertical windshield supports. They are about as big around as a half dollar. Are these in fact speakers? Are they worth it? Are they stock? I've looked at a few other 89 and 87's that did not have these. Haven't looked at any other 90's. Couldn't find any replacements at some of the more "popular" vette online suppliers. One is broke and if I buy the car I'm leaning torwards removing them and just sealing up the holes neatly. The car is listed with the RPO for a 6 speaker bose system. I didn't go looking for all six speakers. Was enjoying the drive way to much to worry about these things.
BTW,,, the car is a 6 speed coupe. Very strong, smooth and responsive. Thought I'd died and gone to heaven while test driving it. Car just might find a new home this weekend.

Are you sure these are speakers? I have a 90 with the preferred equipment group #1 Delco-Bose Music System and it makes no mention of 6 speakers.
There is however a small ventilation outlet with louvers that is on the left upper dash. It directs air on to the side windows....?

Those sound like tweeters. They are not stock. You better check out the rest of the sound system. You cant just hook up speakers on the bose radio. It doesnt make any power of its own and if somebody wired them to the factory amps and the factory speakers are still hooked up the amps are probally on the verge of being shot. The bose system has some wierd ohm speakers. I also have a 90. I had to completly remove the bose system and but all aftermarket speakers, amp and a cd player in. You cant just hook up new speakers to a bose radio, unless they are factory replacements. The bose speakers are 1 ohm and almost all aftermarket brands are 4 ohm. Hope theres no major problems good luck

This car has the UXO rpo code (bose 6 speaker system). I suspect they are tweaters as well, as the one that is broke is just the back plastic frame and two wires. However, and I should have said earlier (sorry), it has an aftermarket stereo system. It sounds ok, so I didn't think to ask about the speakers / stereo compatibility. After I got behind the wheel, the stereo was no longer an important issue. I wasn't paying any attention to it.

I also have the UX0 rpo code...I just went out to the garage to check. There are no speakers of any kind on the front windshield pillars.
They must be after-market.

Thanks to all. I appreciate the responses. I believe that if I get the car, the items are history.

You're right the UX0 code refers to a 6-speaker stereo system. Although the speakers in question are not part of the original system perhaps someone can let us know where the 6 speakers are located??
I have 2 in the back and 2 mounted on the lower door sills, but where are the other 2?
Anyone?
Thanks, Safety

Those little speakers on the windshield supports are definitely not stock. Sounds like someone put in an aftermarket system.

My Corvette(s): 75 coupe, not finished yet. |
they are not stock but will improve the sound dramatically,i'm putting a set in my 75, they just bring the crisp high sounds to the forefront. add a set of subs and an amp in the trunk and you will have a good system.
like you said, you don't need any sound system in that. mike

Well, I'll be picking the car up on Sunday becoming a proud owner of a Corvette for the first time. I will probably take the mini speakers out. The stereo that is in it seems adequate for now, and it's not at the top of the "fixup" list. The fellow who has it now has done a tremendous job on maintaining the engine with little work on the interior. That said, the inside isn't all that bad for the car. He was working from the "inside out" , so to speak. Since I'm not the most mechanically skilled at this point, that was good. I can handle the interior stuff fairly well. Can't wait to see it sitting in my garage instead of his.
