Default Finished the jeep box

Last night I finished the Jeep box. I had to pull the steering wheel and wire brush the splines. All paint must be removed so the 48 spline x 1 inch flaming river universal would slide on.
Notice the nice alignment, the compact joint.

The unit fits very well and I find when I reach through the window and rock the steering wheel the front discs also move instantly.
I have installed the Coleman adapters so any lines should bolt right up
The control valve is split in two and the ball valve is locked in place and the actual control part of the valve is discarded. All lines under the car are gone.
It makes for a very neat undercarriage. Nothing hanging low.
Special Thank you to Jim Oneal/Pro South who put me on to the idea of the Jeep box and later provided me with a good unit.
Thanks Jim

Default steering box

Norval,

Why did you do the swap? For improved steering and tracking? Have you had a chance to drive it since you made the change? Did you have to shorten the column to make the connection to the box?
thanks

I did the swap because I wanted to improve on a 30 year old design. The stock system is really outdated. You turn the wheel, this turn goes through a 13-1 steering box which has play in the recirculatory balls and the pitman shaft, this movement then cuases the control valve to push one way of the other. the control valve interprets this pressure and send fluid to a slave cylinder to push the wheels one way or the other.
The stock system looks cluttered, is prone to leaking and not does follow grooves in the road at times.
Talk about a chain of command.

The jeep box is a new late 90's design and the control spool it right on the input of the box. Turn the wheel and the control valve instantly gets the command to turn. It also prevent back feed from the wheels pushing back up through the box. It is very neet, gone is the long leak prone lines, the control valve and replace with short stationary lines.
Very responsive.
The jeep box in kit form is $675 and steroids is $1249
A steering expert recommended the box over steroids.

To shorten a steering column all you do is gently tap the end with a rubber hammer and the one steering shaft slides up inside the other one. It took only a few minutes to slowly tap the column back.

Norval,

You ought to just install a web cam in your shop and hold class! Great job.
