Steering box adjustment

Besides the simple adjustment on top of the box has anyone loosened the lock ring where the steering shaft enters the box as well as the nut and done the play adjustment?
Can this be done with the box in the car and connected or do I have to pull it.
Thanks for any pointers/advice your can give.

I will be keeping an eye on this thread. I have heard this can be done, and even read about it in a repair manual. However, I am little uneasy messing around with the steering gear box.

I talked to Gary at VB&P about this. They don't suggest doing it at all. I have seen this process done on S-10 trucks with no problems at all.
