Default msd ignition box

I installed an msd 6a box on my 65 with a 327 (250hp). Its done a nice job of improving the preformance of the car. My question though is what exactly is this thing actualy controlling. I beleave the dwell is, but how about the points and timing. Also do I still need the ballast resister or not. I also installed an edelbrock carb inplace of my stock carter, It also has made a big differance but I am getting a gas smell on hard acceleration, maybe this is normal sure would like some feed back here to. Thanks for any input. Roland.

Hi
The MSD box, as I used to have one is for (multi spark distribution)
these units give out 3to5 sparks per firing burning unused gases in the chambers, see the twin point dizzi does the same as one spark follows the other in your case you get 3-5 sparks.
The ballast resister will allow 12 volts to the coil when cranking to start the motor but reduce the voltage to 9volts when the motor is running , if you run a 12 coil as I used to and a mutch better option than you can remove or bi-pass the ballast.
If you want to check your MSD , take a sparplug lead off place it 1/4 of an inch away from the engines valve covers and with a screw driver open and close the points you will see multi sparks even tho you only open the points once. Make sure you leave the ignition on and be carfull you dont get zapped in the process.
Good luck

Jose
