If your power went out during the climax of Sunday's Colts-Patriots showdown, blame the red Corvette. Or, if you believe the Corvette driver, blame the guy who cut off the red Corvette, causing the Corvette to slam into a Florida Power & Light switching cabinet at the corner of Southwest 107th Avenue and 22nd Terrace.
The crash at 7 p.m. caused about 5,000 Florida Power & Light customers lost power temporarily, said FPL spokeswoman Sharon Bennett.
Not only did it scorch the box, but it caused a power surge that downed a power line several blocks away, residents said. Pedro Moises, who lives near 28th Street and 106th Avenue, said he was watching football on TV when he noticed the screen start flickering on and off, as did the lights in his house. Then he heard a loud pop and went outside to check it out. After spotting the downed, sparking power line, he got his cellphone and called 911. Police blocked off the street.
Crews were able to switch most customers back on line within minutes, Bennett said. But, she added, 500 remained without power for about an hour after the accident.
If you missed the end of the game, The New England rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Indianapolis, 24-20.
