Default "TQ" (That's Tech Question).. About My Computer..Having a Problem..

I nstalled a new HD in m laptop running Windows XP Pro. The puter runs fine. It has 4 "USB" ports. One of them is in use for an wiress mouse which works in any of the ports.

Now the problem... I have a Sandisk Micro Cruzer 2 Ghz USB salad state drive dongle. It worked fine before the HD change out. It still works ok when I plug it into my Desk top USB Port.

I have tryied a ADD NEW HARDWARE in the contol panel but it does't see it and it won't light up like it use too. The only way I can get it to light up is by turning off the computer and restarting it. Then it will light up. However, the confuser ,still does not see the drive in the "USB Port"

I have tried it in the other ports but no go.

WTF...??? Any Idea's...

hmm, that is odd.

If you had data worth keeping on the flash drive (USB drive... whatever) don't try the following:

Right click on My Computer > Computer Management

Click on Disk Management on the left of the window.

Once that loads, have a look at your USB drive on the right - I'm not sure what your drive letters are on your PC, but it may be d:, e:\, f:, g:, etc. Either way it will be 2gb or 2048,000,00xxxx bytes.

See if you can initialise it, or format it. Either or should make it readable again.

If you have data worth keeping, try the following:
Now, if you can't view it on your laptop, but can view it on other PCs, I'm a little stumped. You may want to do the following:

Right click My Computer > Properties.

Click on the Hardware Tab, and then the Device manager button.

Find your USB flash drive somewhere in there. It will either be under Other Devices, or Disk Drives (it may be somewhere else, but the chances are slimish). If you can find it, right click on it, and go to uninstall.

Restart your PC, and see what happens.

Standaed Universal PCI To USB Hub Controllers
Standaed Universal PCI To USB Hub Controllers
Standaed Universal PCI To USB Hub Controllers
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

Nothing under any kind of drive or mass storage device or any thing

You may have to go to the Sandisk web site and download there driver for your model of flash drive. XP pro is good at most plug and play items but is not perfect.

Heh Brian,
Thanks for the reply. With the help of John Maher on another forum, it turns out that the master USB Controller under other devices was turned off. The other 4 USB controllers were on under hardware.

So when I turned on the USB Contoller Master the USB ports turned on.

Don't ya just love theway they have to make everything sound so "Magical" blah blah blah...

Sometimes the USB dongle will end up with the same drive letter as something else and "Dissapear" on certain computers. We have that problem with networked computers mapping out to network drives.

That sounds a lot like something that happened to me on that computer (if that is the one, sounds like it may be?) many lifetimes ago when I installed a new OS.
I'm glad you tracked it down. It had me scratching my head for a while too, at the time.

Now the big question is, what are we going to do about that "Salad State" dongle?

Heh Tammy,
Yep..it's your puter... The origina HD was still working but every now and then it would just hang up and freez on a web page. Then you would have to force power off and restart. It used to happen about once a month.

Then I learned a new trick called the " Fonz"!!. Just give it a shot on the back cover and it would start working again. Since I'm out of work I decided to istall a new Toshiba 100Ghz HD that's been siiting in the box for about 3 months.

It's working ok now. But when I first put that restore disc in that was in the case , it said ready to start windows "(98")..?? Then I found the XP Pro disc. Is that the original Restore disc that came with the puter...as the Toshiba Utilities such as the Toshiba Power Monitor ect arn't on the XP Pro disc.

Also.. check for a PM from me...

Windows 98, dang, I don't remember if that's what the machine came with in the beginning or not. We've had a number of toshiba laptops..

... OK, now that I think about it, the one you have is the only one that could have possibly come with win 98. The other ones were older OS's than that. So, yes, that would be the original restore CD that came with it.

The XP Pro CD that you have is from when I had an unlimited MSDN developer subscription. I upgraded that machine to XP Pro when I had it. Back when you bought the computer from me, I reloaded the original system and then upgraded it to XP Pro.

Got your pm, that's a funny story, sorry to have left those little "gifts" behind in the laptop case

Problem is that those "Geeks" can probably buy us all out of pocket change.
And have all the Corvettes they could want.
In fact they probably hire somebody to drive them for them... (Now that's the job I want!)

If your USB controllers are Intel brand, then you might want to go to the Intel website and check the downloads section. You just need to know what model USB controller you have (go to your system device area where you'll see all of your hardware arrangements and write down the model number.

The Puter has label that says "Designed for Windows XP"glued to top face plate.
You bought it in 2003, so it should have come with windows Basic XP installed.
Are you sure you might not have an Toshiba XP Restore disc laying around??

Doesn't seem like they would have installed Windows 98 on that Puter in 2003.
Anyway no big deal.. Glad you enjoyed the story I PM-ed you.

The only Toshiba disk that I have laying around is "Toshiba configuration builder CD Satellite 2800 series" which I think is for Eric's old laptop. I had also written "Eric" on the sleeve.

The weird thing is, I put that laptop back to its original condition with that restore disk right before cruisefest 06, and then upgraded it to xp pro. I was pretty sure when I was all done, I put all the CD's that I used to put it back to original with the computer. At any rate, I don't think I have any of that stuff here. Sorry!
