Default Guess what I found while pulling old carpet ??

Weather was gorgeous today so I pulled out the 68 and removed the seats in preporation to pull out all the old tatered and moldy carpet. Everything came out well, through the carpet over by the trash cans. Continued to vacuum everything out of car and surprisingly the car looks very nice where carpet was.

On to the good stuff, began to roll up the old carpet to through in the can and there it was.................... a 3inch x 3inch piece of paper. You guessed it, a copy of the build sheet. I unfolded it oh so carefully and all that was there was the left hand side of the sheet. It does'nt have the option code #s any more, but it did have the date and build number.

I do also have the tank sticker from tank and it had an odd thing.. the PO1 hubcaps were hand written on the bottom of the sticker. I always thought that was written by a previous owner. Well, in blue ink, hand written, is the hubcap option. I laid the 2 build sheets side by side and sure enough, they are identicle.

So all of you C2 and C3 owners of original carpet, you may want to carefully peel up the drivers side carpet and check for your document..

Thanks for sharing such a cool story! Glad to hear the weather was cooperating with you today.

When I pulled up my carpet, all I found was the OEM insulation. Oh well.

I ripped the carpet out of my 69 a few years ago and guess what I found ? Yep, wires for a trailer -no build sheet. The original owner was an ulta red neck.

WOW. That is so cool. If you have the build sheet from the gas tank how come there was an additional document inside the Vette under the carpet? Was this the norm? I have a 79 and found the build sheet and recovered it from the gas tank. Should I bother looking for additional documents under the carpet inside the Vette? If so, where on the drivers side?

I took out my center console last winter and found a "business" card for an exotic dancer named Sherrie.

Had she been a guest in the car, I wonder, or was she once the owner?

Vette79,
I've read several other stories about owners finding the build sheets in various locations:
-up in the suspention
-under the dash
-under the carpet in various areas
But I've never heard of a 2nd build sheet. Maybe one of the NCRS guys will answer that for us.
As far as where did I find it.. under the drivers side but not sure exact location, I was so excited when I saw it, I did'nt remember its exact location.
I dont think it was a complete build sheet, I think it may have been torn in half vertically.
Enough info though to confirm the tank sticker.
I am cureous though if anyone else has found duplicate sheets..

The build sheet was a multi part carbon document. It was used all along the assembly line to tell the workers what parts to install on that specific build number. One copy was glued to the gas tank before the body drop. The other copies were used all along the line and when done the workers would throw them in the trash. Except, if they were running behind or were rushed for whatever reason. Then they may have just stashed their copy in some hidden space on the car such as under the dash, under the carpet, in the springs under the seat, inside the doors, etc, etc. Just anywhere to get rid of their copy rather than walking over to the trash can. Good luck hunting

tom...

I've read that the Corvette order (what we call the build sheet) was seven pages and included carbon paper. The top five pages did not have VIN information, the last two sheets contained the VIN. To burst the sheets and pull out the carbons, the bundle was often held by the upper left corner. Lots of tank stickers have the upper left corners missing where they were torn when bursting the sheets.

Note penciled 263 build number on this tank sticker. Since the VIN info was on the last two pages of the build order bundle, it's possilbe the actual VIN of this car ended with 763 (763 - 500 = 263).

Great pics. Thanks Mike. I couldn't save the center of my build sheet were the glue was at but I have most of it so I am not sure on some of the options my Vette is suppose to have but having it is at least validating most of the Vette, right?

My Vette's hand more hands on it than Sherrie! I don't think there is anywhere I could look that hasn't already been handled, fondled or felt up.

You can get a copy of the Dealer Wholesale Invoice for your car from Allied-Vaughn for $50.00; has everything that's on the Corvette Order Copy plus all the shipping information.

It's here on the forum. Allied-Vaughn was contracted by GM to microfiche 79-81 dealer invoices. Follow the directions. If they have your VIN in their records, they will want $50 billable to your credit card. I was able to get the dealer invoice for my '80 was was tickled pink.

Folks with Bowling Green built cars might be able to get a copy of thier build sheets through the NCM.
