2006 Black Roadster
Default For All You Speed Demons

Not that anyone should ever attempt this, but it is an interesting story.

Over the 2006 Columbus Day weekend, a man named Alex Roy drove from New York to Los Angeles in 31 hours in a trip that went 2,795 miles, and in which he claims to have averaged a speed of 93 MPH, and fequently hit speeds of 160 MPH.

The car he did this in was a 2000 BMW M5, and he claims he waited a year to make this public so as to ensure that any tickets he might have gotten after the fact from the video evidence couldn't be prosecuted on statute of limitations grounds.

Here's a LINK to this story, and from the news page, there's another link you can hit to watch a short news clip.

What do you all think? Was this daring, or just stupid and reckless?

-Patrick

Yea, it was daring and reckless. He planned it out thoroughly and to be as least offensive as possible, but there were still tons of risk but he went about it as smartly as possible.

Not to say I approve, but it is impressive.

Personally, I think they need to start a legal Cannonball. A single annual race from coast to coast. But getting all the permissions would make that prohibitive.

Of course, setting up a moving "safe" corridor that would travel across the country with the lead car at the front, and if you fell too far behind, you were out of the race, would be extremely complex and difficult.

Spoken like someone who got a ticket for speeding outside a police station. Oh wait, you did get a ticket outside a police station.

Reckless ,daring and bordering on stupid. Although I can't say to much because back in 68 and 69 I used to drive from Ft Carson Colorado to NW Iowa at high speeds often.
We would leave Ft Carson about 5 pm. Our normal time for 735 miles was about 9 hr 15 min. Most of the trip was run over 100 mph. About half the distance was on two lane roads.
The fastest time was 8 1/2 hrs in a 69 chevelle, twice. Most of the time I had the speedo bumping off the 120 mph mark.
When I think back on the tires and cars we had I was very lucky to survive that.

Slightly off-topic, I recommend the book "Cannonball" by Brock Yates. It's the story behind the original "Cannonball Baker Sea-to-shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash" that was the basis for the Cannonball Run movies.

Couldn't a Cannonball be organized similar to the way that the Silver State Classic is run? I know the highway is shut down during the SSC but I'm thinking of the other aspect where they regulate your speed and you try to maintain that target speed.
