From Ground Zero of Rockies-Mania
A curious thing has happened here in the Denver area- it seems we have a baseball team. Who knew? Well, I say, "who knew." The real purpose of the Colorado Rockies, since the one season they made playoffs previously (1995) was to fill the void in sports coverage between the end of the Avalanche's hockey playoff-run and the start of Broncos training camp. That's all changed, and winning 21 of your last 22 games, and sweeping the Phillies and Diamondbacks in the playoffs will do that. Rockies' fever has gripped the Centennial state.
Well, as someone who resides in the middle of ground zero of Rockies-mania, here's some reports, offered strictly for your reading enjoyment.
Resisting suggestions that they should head back to Tucson and go into an October mode of Spring Training, the Rockies are dividing themselves into two squads and playing against each other to ward off the possibility of being on an eight day "Holliday." No word on the rumor that this will be a "Shirts" and "Skins" intramural event (or the related XX-Chromosome hope in the Denver area that Tulowitzky and Hawpe will be on "skins" roster), however, it seems confirmed that the Rox will not be leaving Denver before they depart Monday for where ever Game 1 of the World Series will be played.
Tickets for Games 3 and 4 at Coors Field will go on sale Monday, October 22nd at 10:00 AM Mountain Time. But you won't be able to get them at the Coors Field ticket office. Tickets will only be available on-line, much to consternation of fans who won't have internet access from work on Monday morning. There's already cries of "unfair" from fans who will be suffering from dial-up internet access, who charge that folks who have multiple internet connections have an advantage in ticket buying. Tickets to the Rock Pile, which during the regular season go for about $4, will be going for $65. And if you have to ask what club level seats will cost for the World Series, trust me, you can't afford them.
Under the category of "What would sports be without Political Correctness?", an NYU professor was interviewed on local Denver area radio yesterday, claiming that the Cleveland Indians mascot, Chief Wahoo, is racist and demeaning to Native Americans. Although Ward Churchill has not offered any comment on this, I have taken this charge to heart. Given my Irish ancestory, I've decided to create my own organization: The National Association for the Advancement of Celtic People, or NAACP. (Very original, don't you think?) Our first order of business, after we sign either Pierce Brosnan or Liam Neeson as our National Spokesperson, is to get the University of Notre Dame to drop their deeply offensive mascot of The Fighting Irish. We also plan to see that jokes involving drunken Irishmen in pubs are banned world-wide.
And finally, with Rockies-mania pushing the Broncos out of local sports headlines in the middle of October for the first time in franchise history, these T-shirts, available from Seattle-based PurpleStore.com have inexplicably become popular in Denver:
So, for all you baseball fans, what are you thinking about the Rockies' Cinderella story, and are you hoping to see them face Boston or Cleveland in the World Series?

Hey,
I thought that perhaps Geekinavette had jinxed the whole thing when he expressed similar feelings as billy81vette.
Won't you know it that as soon as the subject of baseball came-up in the CF-V thread, but Geekinavette hails from Colorado and he said he'll be attending Cleaveland and how this season may be decided between the two cities...but then Boston refused to go away quitely....
