Default Help with a/c comp. removal on 87 vette.

I need to replace the water pump on my 87 conv. Have most of the componets
removed out of the way.. I am having a difficult time with my a/c compressor pump
lower bolt. This bolt is behind the pulley on the bottom, it is odd shaped and I
can't get a wrench on it. What's the trick? The bolt is round with a flat side.

If the bolt is "round with a flat side" it sounds like the bolt head has been rounded off during a prior repair/maintenance session.

You're probably going to need to resort to desperate measures such as vice grips to get the bolt broke loose and removed.

I did try vice grips but they would not fit behind the pulley.. I may have to get a GM
a/c clutch puller to get the pulley out of the way.. thanks for the reply.

Sent you a e-mail but forgot that there at least one
slot in the pulley to line up for access to the bolt.

You need a star type socket, also there is a recess in the bracket so the flat side of the bolt only comes out one way. Good luck, Jim.

I did find out that the bolt is a 45 torx with the flat side.. The bolt was so full of grime
it looked round with a flat side.. as it turned out the a/c compressor pulley did not need
to come off.. My chiltons manual was not to informative on this whole procedure...
I did get it all back together and do appreciate the responces I have recieved..
