1970 Exhaust System question
Greetings!
Can someone tell me roughly the length of their front pipes -
from the exhaust manifold to the point where they intersect with
the mid-pipes? I have a debockle exhaust system.
Its a long story.. In the end, I am putting on the correct exhaust manifolds,
I need the front pipes from the manifolds to reach the mid pipes which,
I do have. When I cut off the 2 1/2" headers, i found there was another 20"
worth of 2 1/2 " pipes from the headers to the mid pipes, with a 2" reducer.
So, I need to make sure before I buy the new front pipes that they are
going to be long enough before I cut the rest of the 2 1/2" pipe and reducer
off. I also need to know if there is a 2" coupling that will allow the new 2"
front pipes to mate with the 2" mid pipes. Confused?
Thanks.
Rudy

Rudy,
Last summer I was toying with the idea of reverting mine back to manifolds as well. I know Corvette Central offers the pipes you described.

The 1970 AIM gives a pretty good example of the exhaust, no dimensions though. It looks like they extend to the frame pass through just behind the engine. I can look under mine in the morning and let you know. Not sure how I'm going to get you a measurement though.

I just checked mine, the front pipe runs all the way to the frame pass through, the rear pipe comes forward of the pass through about 2 1/2 inches. The front pipe fits into the rear pipe. My exhaust is not the stock one, but it is the stainless replacement exhaust for the car, and is supposed to be correct.

What you want to ensure is that your exhaust pipes (mid-pipes) were not cut when the headers were installed. If memory serves, the pipes from the stock manifolds are essentially universal (one size fits all for small blocks) with the exception of the AT cars. The RH pipe on AT cars might be a bit longer and has a different bend to it to clear the auto tranny.
If your existing pipes are otherwise stock, the regular stock front tubes will be the correct length.

I went from the 2 1/2 inch manifolds all the way back to the flow masters with 2 1/2 stainless and it breathes better runs smoother more power and better fuel economy and the sound will blow you away it's worth it if youcan do it.Pat

Greetings and a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!
I finished my car a couple a weeks ago and put her in dry storage
for the winter. I bought the correct front pipes from Corvette Central,
ran them into the two port holes in the first cross member, had a local
exhaust shop cut and custom bend (2) 1 1/2 foot extensions and clamped to
the front pipes.
In the late summer, pulled off the rear portion of exhaust,
wiped down the pipes and mufflers which, were fairly new, primer
and painted with high temp black paint to match what was correct from
the factory in 1970 and using new clamps, re-hung to within a 1/2 inch of rear
spring. After sitting on jack stands for over 5 months I lowered her and
everything looked great.
Have a great 2008!
