245hp 350 cu. in.V8 engine, six-speed manual transmission, four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 96.2" Corvette’s biggest, and only significant, change for 1989 was the replacement of the Doug Nash 4+3 manual transmission with a 6-speed gearbox by Germany’s Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen. The two top gears in the ZF-6 speed were overdrive ratios and a complicated (and much-maligned) Computer Aided Gear Selection system locked out 2nd and 3rd gears during part-throttle acceleration to adapt Corvettes to the EPA’s fuel economy cycle test. CAGS was not a problem, however, for the 1989 Corvette Challenge cars since the talented and ambitious Challenge drivers hardly knew the meaning of “part throttle.” Sixty Challenge cars came off the Bowling Green Corvette assembly line; thirty were race-prepared. The standard L98 engines were replace during race preparation at Powell Motorsports’ Wixom, Michigan facility with engines specifically built for the Challenge by the Flint engine plant and then turned for equal performance by Specialized Vehicles, Inc. in Troy, Michigan. The sealed engines were replaced at the end of the Corvette Challenge season with the original factory-installed numbers- matching L98s. Other Challenge preparation was similar to the 1988 season, consisting of necessary safety equipment (roll cages and fire systems) and details like seats. All 1989 Corvette Challenge cars came with the Z61 Performance Handling Package, which included the new FX3 Selective Ride and Handling system and heavy-duty springs and stabilizer bars. Only thirty of the Challenge specification 1989 Corvettes received race preparation, including the very successful #11 here from Mike Yager’s MY Garage collection. Delivered through Valley Chevrolet in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, its first owner was Peter Lockhart’s Lockhart Racing in Toronto, Canada. Lockhart and his Sony sponsored Corvette participated in the full Corvette Challenge season, winning the Toronto and Mosport races, coming second at Sears Point and third at Des Moines and the Meadowlands. This very successful team finished the season as Championship runner-up to Bill Cooper. Corvette Challenge race car #11 was purchased by Mike Yager at the conclusion of the season following the last race at Petersburg, Florida and has been a core element of the MY Garage collection since. It has only 3,672 miles at the time of cataloging and is completely original and as raced throughout. Like all the Corvettes in the My Garage collection, “it has been assiduously and consistently maintained by Corvette professionals during its long and proud ownership.” A successful Corvette Challenge race car, Mike Yager’s #11 vivid Sony sponsorship and competitive performance was highly visible during the 1989 season, making it one of the most important and recognized of only 30 race-prepared Corvette Challenge cars built during the 1989 series.
In January 2003, Steve & Pam Hall purchased the #11 Sony car from Mike Yager’s collection. Only 28 of the original 1989 Corvette Challenge cars remain.
